"It seems to be all about blanket defences and the death of gaelic football"

Jim McCorry is fed up with all the negative reporting on gaelic football.

The Down manager, whose side has clinched promotion to Division One of the national football league, believes the game isn't in as unhealthy a state as many observers would have us believe:

"For a while, the whole focus seemed to be on the problems surrounding the annual fixtures programme and how it should be sorted out," he is quoted in The Belfast Telegraph. "Everybody was reporting on this ad nauseum and now it seems to be all about blanket defences and the death of gaelic football.

"I don't think there is any depth to this at all. I believe that managers will adjust as we go along and there will be re-adjustments come championship time again. I am of the opinion that too many people are prepared to ring that death-knell too early for us. It's very boring when all you see is negative reporting all the time."

"When you look at the scores we have got such as 3-13 against Kildare, 1-17 against Galway and 2-14 against Westmeath as well as the 3-12 we landed against Laois at the weekend there, I don't think such totals would in any way be endemic of a blanket defence mechanism.

"I honestly don't know how we could make the game more entertaining unless we try and double those kind of scorelines. We try to play a fast, attacking brand of football although I accept that it is probably boring for people to have to watch too much of the blanket defence system."
