Under-21 Footballers progress to B Championship Final
Congratulations to the Under-21 footballers who held on determinedly to withstand a late Loughinisland challenge and progress to the Final of the Under-21 B Championship.
Played in bright winter sunshine and with a crisp breeze blowing straight down the field, the game served up quality football from both sides and kept the rival supporters transfixed to the final whistle.
Loughinisland drew first blood when Rory Mason converted in the first minute. Carryduff initially struggled to get into their stride as the Loughinisland defence stood up stoutly to their task until Ryan McKee found the Loughinisland net in the 7th minute of play. The Loughinisland response, however was emphatic with points from Stephen mason (8th) and Rory Mason, a sublime score from the outside of his left boot in the 9th minute before he converted a free in the 12th. He kicked wide from a sideline cut (14th) before Gary Starnney (15th) blasted wide of the Carryduff goal.
Carryduff upped the tempo with a concerted effort from the 20 minutes mark and had five points in quick succession from Seán McGonigle (20th),Ryan McKee (22nd0 two from James Lawlor (25th and 26th) before roving half-back Michael McGrath pointed in the 27th minute. During this period Carryduff had held Loughinisland to a solitary point, another conversion from Rory Mason(24th).
At the break Carryduff, having enjoyed the advantage of the breeze, were three ahead on a 1-05 to 0-05 scoreline.
As the second half opened Jack Brennan and Matt Grimley missed opportunities to extend the Carryduff lead but a second Carryduff goal from James Lawlor in the 33rd minute settled them into the game. Full-back Conor Cassidy picked up a yellow card for a mistimed tackle and Rory Mason slotted over the resultant free (34th) before Loughinisland full-back Paddy McGoran picked up a yellow card for his troubles. Aaron McClements pointed for Loughinisland in the 40th minute but Lawlor's point for Carryduff restored their five point advantage. Ronan McGrady picked up a yellow card as the Carryduff defence conceded a number of frees in the face of mounting Loughinisland pressure. Rory Mason converted three frees in as many minutes but Carryduff responded with points from Brennan(48th) Guiness (49th) and a converted free from McGonigle (54th).
Loughinisland brought everything into question with a late goal from Dean McLaughlin (55th) and a converted free from Mason (58th) to level the game but Guiness's late point (59th) secured victory for Carryduff on the narrowest scoreline of 2-10 to 1-12 and they progress to the County Final.
