Aughlisnafin club notes

October 28, 2014

Aughlisnafin U12.5's met Teconnaught in the East Down Division 3 Final on a damp and blustery Sunday morning. With no coin toss by the match official prior to throw in Teconnaught were handed a massive advantage of playing with the strong downfield wind in the first half to lead 3-3 to 0-2 at the short whistle. The 'Fin captain Shea Croskery and full forward Ethan Lyttle on target with the points. Such is football you just have to play with the hand you are dealt and the lads made a game of it in the second half to try and claw back the 10 point deficit. Despite a herculean effort luck was not on their side as the Teconnaught goalkeeper made several superb saves and the crossbar also preventing a score. Other chances went begging and on the counter attack Teconnaught kept the scoreboard ticking over. Shea Croskery and Ben Ogle both found the net and Morgan Croksery saw a superb goal disallowed for over carrying. As the clock ran down Conall King sent over a point with Cathal Murphy also slotting over after a superb solo through the Teconnaught rearguard. Teconnaught edged the second half to run out deserved winners. Final score Teconnaught 5-8 Aughlisnafin 2-4.

The 'Fin should be congratulated for reaching their second championship final in three seasons and if they keep getting into finals then they will have half a chance of eventually winning that elusive first county title. Well done lads on a great effort all season in the Spring & Summer Leagues and in the Championship. Keep working hard and listen to your coaches. There are undoubtedly many proud parents and siblings in the parish of Kilmegan with all the players receiving their runners up medals. This squad along with the absent talisman Conor Matthews together with  Adam Lenaghan & Michael Clarke will be next seasons U-14 squad and the future is indeed bright for this group of players.
