Shane O'Neills club notes

Minor Girls - County Champions Again

Last Thursday our minor girls' team retained their championship title with a resounding win over Silverhill at Silverbridge. The Silverhill team featured several players who had just won Junior and Intermediate titles at the weekend with their respective Forkhill and Silverbridge clubs and had also easily seen off St Peters in the semi final, but on Thursday night they encountered a Shane's team who were in unstoppable form. Any concerns that Shane's management had about complacency creeping in were immediately dispelled with a goal after twelve seconds, followed by a sustained period of dominance where Shanes continued picking off scores at will. Any occasion that Silverhill managed to muster an attack, the threat was swiftly smothered by the Shanes defence, all of whom were in excellent form.
The second half saw Shanes use all their players, with each one making a great contribution when introduced as the girls ran away with the game to finish as more than comfortable winners. Afterwards team captain Ebony Rafferty accepted the cup on behalf of her team and as always, was very humble in victory, expressing appreciation to opponents and match officials alike. The girls now move on to defend their Ulster Minor Championship with the competition getting underway in about 4 weeks time.

The management team of Peter Lynch, Brendan McGuire and Yasmin Mackin would like to thank all the players for their hard work and commitment throughout the year as well as the continued support from our club committee and loyal band of vocal supporters. On behalf of the club I would like to congratulate the all the girls and their management team on their tremendous achievements throughout the year, culminating in their win on Thursday night. This particular group of players have now chalked up a remarkable record in Armagh underage football, having gone through their U-12, U-14, U-16 and minor league and championship seasons unbeaten. Fifteen of those who won the U-12 titles in 2008 were on the field on Thursday night which is a testimony to the commitment these young ladies have for their sport and their club. Everyone associated with the club is very proud of what they have achieved over the past six years and hopefully they will have continued strong support during the Ulster campaign.

Senior Men

Our senior men suffered a very heavy defeat to Armagh Harps in the championship quarter-final on Saturday evening, 4 - 15 to 0 - 1. The Shanes did make the brighter start to the game and could have been three points up early on but they failed to take their chances and from their first attack Armagh Harps scored their first goal. The much physically stronger city side went on to completely boss proceedings and went in at half-time seventeen points to the good with the Shanes failing to score. The trend continued in the second-half and at the final whistle the Shanes had only a single Paul O'Rourke point to show for their efforts over the hour. The senior footballers have had more good days than bad over recent years, winning a Junior championship, winning promotion to Division 1 but we must take the rough with the smooth and now's the time to take stock, plan for next year and move on.

Senior Ladies

Having defeated Crossmaglen last week to guarantee their promotion to Division 1 our senior ladies take on Sarsfields on Monday night to determine who goes up as champions. The game takes place under lights in Abbey Park in Armagh with a 7.00pm throw-in time. Everyone is encouraged to attend the game and cheer the girls on and hopefully lift the league title.

The U21 championship resumes next Sunday 28th September with the Shanes scheduled to play in the semi-final against Craobh Ciaran in Crossmaglen at 2.00pm.
