Shane O'Neills club notes

September 15, 2014

U10s
It was a very early start for our U10s on Saturday morning as they left on a bus for the Moy under 10 tournament in Tyrone at 8.45am and having won the cup competition last week in Dromintee they travelled to Moy and returned home as shield winners. The Moy club run a unique under 10 tournament where you field an A and B side with both sides playing in a league in the first instance before the teams take part in the knock out phase where aggregate scores across the two teams determine the winners. Teams from all over Ulster participate in this event and around 530 kids participated in the games on the day. The Shane's played against Pearse Ogs, Donaghmore, Glenullin and Errigal Ciaran in the group stages and finished with a record of  five wins, one draw and two defeats across the A and B teams which saw them into the shield competition. In the shield quarter-final they played Dungannon with the B team playing first. They won this encounter by three points and the A team followed up by winning by two points to leave the Shanes winners point winners overall. Moortown provided the opposition in the semi final and the B team again started well with a four point victory. The A team lost their game by two points but this left the Shanes winners on aggregate by two points and through to the final against another Armagh team in Keady. The B team had a very tight encounter with Keady in the final and there was some controversy at the end when a narrow one point victory for the Shanes was mistakenly marked down as a one point victory for Keady. This left the A team having to win their encounter but playing some of their best football of the day the A team ran out winners by five points to give the Shane's an aggregate win by four points. There were great scenes at the end as both A and B teams celebrated what was a fabulous squad triumph with both teams contributing the vital wins at the right times. Training for the U10s continues this Tuesday in advance of a busy few weeks as the seasons comes to an end. A special word of thanks to the Moy club for their hospitality on the day and their running of a fabulous tournament and a special word of thanks also to all the parents who travelled to Moy to cheer the team on. On behalf of the club a big well done to all involved.

Senior Men
Our senior men done just enough to see off the challenge of Annaghmore in the championship last Monday night in the Athletic Grounds. Having defeated Killeavy in the previous round the Shanes went into the game with renewed confidence, knowing that victory would see them set up a quarter-final clash with Armagh Harps and after a hard fought contest they claimed the win by a single point, 1 - 11 to 0 - 13.
It was a nervous opening from both teams and it was over five minutes before the first score arrived with Paul O'Rourke getting the Shanes off the mark with a pointed free. Annaghmore replied with two frees of their own and they added another two play from to put them into a three point lead before Damian Doyle fisted over from a tight angle for the Shanes second point of the game. A point from David McCabe had the Shanes back within one before Paul O'Rourke tied things up with a well taken score. Another David McCabe point edged the Shanes back front only for Annaghmore to reply almost immediately and level the game again at five points each with half-time fast approaching. However, the Shanes should have gone in at the break in front when a great flowing move found Paul O'Rourke in front of goal but the normally reliable O'Rourke somehow screwed his shot wide of the up-right and behind for a goal-kick. Annaghmore made the better start to the second period with two quick fire points, one from a free, but the Shanes were soon back on level terms with Paul O'Rourke's third point of the game and a pointed free from Mark McCabe. Annaghmore bossed proceedings for the next ten minutes or so and they raced into a four point lead, 0 - 11 to 0 - 7, and seemed the most likely winners at this stage but the Shanes didn't panic and a great long range point from the impressive Ryan Byrne reduced the deficit to just three. Second-half substitute Oliver Gaughran then got himself on the score-sheet with a well taken point to leave just two between them before Connaire Mackin climbed highest on the edge of the small square to fetch the ball before swivelling and dispatching it to the back of the Annaghmore net. The Shanes had turned the game on its head and, leading by one they could sense victory and a further two points from O'Rourke had them three ahead going into the final minutes. Annaghmore got themselves back within two with their twelve point of the game and were now going all out for the goal that would win them the game but the Shanes defence were rock solid and they restricted their opponents to just another single point to claim the win by the narrowest of margins, 1 - 11 to 0 - 13.
The lads now take on Armagh Harps in the championship quarter-final on Saturday 20th September at 6.00pm in the Athletic Grounds.

Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies travelled to play Dorsey Emmetts on Wednesday night in the league. The Shanes got off to a flying start, scoring a goal in their opening attack. A dominant display in the first half saw the Shanes go in at half time with a fifteen point lead. However as always Dorsey kept battling throughout the game and perhaps helped by Shanes easing up a little, reduced the deficit a bit. In the final 10 minutes though, Shanes upped the pace and a goal from Siofra Doyle killed off the contest as the Shanes ran out comfortable winners. Overall this was a very good team display by all 20 players who took part and well done to all players on both sides for their effort throughout. The senior ladies have their final league game of the season on Monday evening at home Crossmaglen with a 6.45pm throw-in.

U14 Girls
The U-14s girls finished off their year with two final league games over the past seven days. On Thursday night the girls had their last home game against Clan Eireann to decide the destination of the Division 1 title. The Shanes led at half-time and although the girls put up a titanic battle it was Clan Eireann who came out on top in a closely contested second half to add the Division 1 League title to their Championship success. On Sunday morning the girls finished off their league campaign on a high note with a comprehensive win over neighbours Carrickcruppen. Paul, Paci and Keith would like to thank to all the girls who played U14 this year and also to those who represented Shane's on Armagh teams. Everyone will now take a well earned break before starting some indoor training in a few weeks. An end of season party will also be arranged. The club would also like to thank all the girls and Paul, Paci and Keith for all their hard work and commitment throughout the year.

U8s
Our U8s had a busy weekend of football, starting with a friendly game with Silverbridge on Friday night. There was a great football played over two x eight a side games and it served as a great warm up for the main event of the weekend - the U8s trip to Dromintee to play in the Sean McGennity tournament on Sunday. The Shane's fielded teams in the A and B sections and they had games against Culloville, Burren, Dromintee, Killeavy and Mullaghbawn. There were some fabulous performances overall and at the end of the group stages the Shane's found themselves in the final of the shield against Killeavy. The final was a very exciting and high scoring affair but at the final whistle the young Shane's lost out by a couple of scores to a very good Killeavy side and they ended up as runners-up in the shield competition. The kids should be proud of themselves and their efforts on the day and training continues this Friday night as normal. Thanks to the Dromintee club for the invite to what was a thoroughly enjoyable day's football.

Training for our U6s has recommenced on Wednesday evenings at 6.00pm in Bessbrook Community Centre. All boys and girls at this age group are more than welcome to attend.
