Aughlisnafin GAC club notes

September 08, 2014

Aughlisnafin U12's were in league action at home to St Paul's on Sunday. The Fin were at full strength but St Paul's were stronger in key positions. St Pauls's spurned many chances and remarkably the 'Fin were only three points behind at the interval. A great goal by Dara Burns in addition to points from Conal King (2) and a corker from Conor Matthew for the 'Fin. Half time Aughlisnafin 1-3 St Paul's 0-9. St Paul's grabbed the first goal of the second half to lead by six before Aaran Flanagan pointed to reduce the deficit to five and that was the difference in the end with both sides grabbing 1-2 apiece over the remainder of the game. Aaran Flanagan with a well taken goal and two points, his second point from a 13 m free after he was upended in the 'D'. Morgan Croskery with the final point of the game. Final score Aughlisnafin 2-6 St Paul's 2-11. The result leaves the 'Fin in second place in the division 2 with their last fixture a derby match away to parish neighbours Castlewellan on Sunday 21st September.

The U15's took part in the Down GAA Óg Sport 7 Aside competition on Tuesday evening at Pairc Esler. They played the eventual winners Burren, Bredagh and Mayobridge in three hich octane games and they acquitted themselves well. It was a great experience and one that will stand to them next year.

The Seniors exited the Junior Championship losing against Bright in Saul. The seniors had been struggling to field of late and the nonsensical timing of the game ruled out the services of several key players and put paid to aspirations of a fourth semi final in six seasons. An important championship game at 2 pm on a Saturday meant players were unable to prepare properly for the game or participate due to work commitments. Thanks goes to four of our social footballers for stepping in a short notice to enable the fixture to be played. Bright were dealt the same hand but with a larger pool of players they were better equipped and so it proved.

It was an evenly balanced first half and in fact had the 'Fin taken their opportunities it would have been a lot closer at half time. Donagh Steele, Sean Willoughby and Brennain McComiskey dominating the midfield sector in the first half. Brannigan and McComiskey both getting the points for the 'Fin. Half time score Aughlisnafin 0-4 Bright 1-7. However the patched up 'Fin team were unable to replicate their good first half performance as Bright took control of the second period to see out a comfortable win in the end. Final score Aughlisnafin 0-8 Bright 2-21.

The Ladies will be awarded two 'walk over' victories against St Michael's with their opponents unable to fulfil the last two remaining fixtures of their Junior League programme. This completes their fixtures for the season and they finished third in the table with a decent return of eight wins and seven losses. They are a relatively young team and there is a bright future for this group of players.
