James McCartan has made a quick return to management with Queen's University.

The 1991 and '94 All-Ireland winner, who stepped down as Down manager after five seasons in charge earlier this summer, is returning to a role he previously held in the last decade when he led the Belfast college to four successive Sigerson Cup finals appearances, winning the trophy at the fourth attempt in 2007.

"James has an exceptional record and it certainly helps that he is familiar with the university scene," Queen's University Development Officer and former Louth manager Aidan O'Rourke said.

McCartan's return to the Queen's post comes amid speculation that Down will move to appoint a new manager after this weekend's SFC quarter-finals.
