Benny Coulter wants the next Down football manager to be from the county.

Armagh native Jim McCorry, who is in charge of county champions Kilcoo, and Antrim's Frank Dawson, who is currently managing Byransford, have been among the names linked to the vacancy which has arisen following James McCartan's decision to step down last weekend. Former Armagh star Tony McEntee has already ruled himself out the running.

"For me, the new manager should be a Down man, managing his own county. We are a proud county and have enough men around the area who are well capable of doing the job," veteran forward Coulter wrote in his column for the Newry Democrat.

Coulter said of McCartan: "As a player and a manager James gave everything he could over the years to Down football and he can certainly leave the county knowing that he has given his all."
