Kilcoo Club Notes

July 28, 2014
Last Monday evening Kilcoo under 14 boys team travelled to Saul. The Kilcoo lads turned in an amazing performance racking up 10 goals and 31 points with the vast majority of these coming from play. On Tuesday evening the minor footballers travelled to Castlewellan and showed once again that they are an improving team and turned in a balanced display of teamwork with disciplined defending and ruthless attacking in a high scoring highly competitive game. Final score Castlewellan 01-15 Kilcoo 05-12
On Thursday the under 16 boys had home advantage over An Riocht. Fielding a relatively young team the Magpies couldn't make the home advantage stick, but whilst the visitors were indeed the better team the home team were unlucky not to have registered a higher score. Final score Kilcoo 00-08 An Riocht 03-11.
On Friday the seniors played neighbours Bryansford in Division One. The home team put the Magpies under pressure right from the throw in, registering the first point after raids from both sets of forwards registered wides. Faced with a determined Bryansford team the Kilcoo lads dug deep and playing an attractive brand of attacking football they began picking of scores and with the award of a penalty just before the interval they built up a small breathing space which allowed them to push on in the second half. Final score Bryansford 01-07 Kilcoo 02-14
On Saturday the senior ladies were at home to Castlewellan. The home team did manage to rack up an impressive 01-07 against a very strong opposition but in the end Castlewellan ran out comfortable winners. However the Kilcoo ladies can take a lot of comforts from large areas of their game and with the senior league almost split in two the Kilcoo girls primary aim is to keep putting in good team efforts and in time they shall make the jump to title contenders.
With the U'12 boys game against Bredagh called off, the boys lined out against the U'14 girls on Sunday morning. In a full blooded effort from both sides, the game was level on about 6 occasions, with the referee having to keep a firm eye on things as the odd brother and sister did not hold back in tackling! Football was the winner in the end, despite some of the spectators doing their best to influence some of the decisions!! The match proved to be great run out for both teams and very worthwhile, with a re-match definitely on the cards.

The U'12 boys line out against Downpatrick at home next Sunday

On Sunday the Seconds played Castlewellan in the Premier Reserve Championship and with Kilcoo able to field a strong side they progressed to the next round with a final score line of Castlewellan 00-06 Kilcoo 02-19
Congratulations to Kilcoo's Callum Rogers who had a fantastic couple of weeks. Attending Campa Chormaic he picked up an individual award for his use of the Irish language and then he had the honour of being picked as one of the Down representatives from Cumann Na mBunscol during the half time games at the Ulster Final in Clones. These children also formed a guard of honour during the introduction of the Tyrone team from 1989. Callum was presented with a commemorative Ulster medal for his day at the Ulster Final, and represented his School, his club and his county with honour. Well done Callum.
