Shane O'Neill's club notes

July 28, 2014
Senior Men
Our senior men were in action on Sunday afternoon at home to Madden and lost by three points, 1 - 15 to 1 - 12.
The sides swapped points in the opening minutes with Connaire Mackin on target for the Shanes before the home side eased two pints in front with points from Mícheál Brady and Connaire Mackin. Madden then slotted over two frees to bring the sides level before a point from Paul O'Rourke edged the Shanes ahead again. The sides were level again soon after but Kristian Magill put the Shanes one ahead again with a well taken point only for Madden to equalise straight away and leave the sides all square at the break, 0 - 5 to 0 - 5.
Oliver Gaughran was on the score-board early in the second-half for the Shanes but Madden then went on to hit 1 - 4 in a row to put themselves in control of the game and six points to the good. A Paul O'Rourke free reduced the deficit but that was cancelled out almost immediately by another Madden point only for Oliver Gaughran to reply again for the Shanes to leave five between them. Madden fired over their eleventh point of the contest before the Shanes hit four points on the trot with Kristian Magill, Ryan McCabe, Damian Doyle and Oliver Gaughran all on target to leave the Camlough side two points in arrears. The Shanes had their tails up at this stage and when Paul O'Rourke was fouled in the square he stepped to dispatch the resulting penalty to the Madden net to put his side one ahead. However instead of lifting the Shanes even more this proved to be their last score of the game as Madden went on to score the final four points to win by three, 1 - 15 to 1 - 12. Another low point was the injury suffered by team captain Mícheál Brady late in the game and we all wish him a speedy recovery. The club would like to thank local man Garreth O'Shea and Gortrush Foods for the generous and much appreciated sponsorship of the game.

Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies had a home league game on Saturday evening against Forkhill and recorded a great win. With a few players missing through injury and work commitments Shanes were a little depleted in numbers but certainly not in heart and determination. After an exciting first half Forkhill enjoyed a six point lead but the Shanes, as they have often done in the past, came storming back with a strong second half to win by four. This was another strong team performance where every player put in a huge effort to gain the victory which keeps Shanes in second place in Division 2. Well done to all players.
The next fixtures for senior are Saturday, 2nd August at home to Sarsfields and Wednesday, 6th August at home to Mullaghbawn. The Sarsfields game is likely to be moved due to Armagh game in Croke Park next Saturday.

Minor Boys
Our minor boys returned to action last Tuesday evening with a home game against Middletown. The Shanes were a bit rusty in the first-half and found themselves six points in arrears at the break. However they stepped up their performance in the second-half and played some great football to get themselves right back into the game and they went on to claim the win by six, 5 - 12 to 5 - 6. Next up for the lads is a championship game away to Sarsfields on Monday evening at 7.30pm.

U16 Boys
The U16 boys put a on a brilliant exhibition of football on Thursday evening to comprehensively beat a highly fancied Sarsfields side on a score-line of 9 - 17 to 1 - 8 to keep themselves right in the hunt for the league title. The Shanes hit the front in the opening minutes of the contest and went to totally dominate proceedings with some outstanding football. The Shanes led by eighteen points at the break and they continued to play the better football throughout the second-half with every single player dominating the opponents right across the pitch to put on what was undoubtedly their best performance of the year. The Shanes team on the night was: M Bradley, M McParland, E McQuade, R Byrne, N O'Reilly, C Magee, K Mooney, E McCabe (0 - 1), S Hillen (1 - 1), C McMullan (1 - 2), M Girvan (4 - 3) M Barr (0 - 1), E Osborne (2 - 6), P Garvey, C Mackin (1 - 3), D Harris. Next up is the final league game of the year at home to St Paul on Thursday, 7th August.

U16 Girls
The U16 girls have an away game against Dromintee on Tuesday evening. The game throws in at 7.00pm and all players are asked to meet at the Shanes at 6.00pm.

U15 Óg Sport
Our U15 boys took part in the Óg sport competition in Clann Eireann on Sunday. The lads lost to Pearse Ógs in the group stage but went on to defeat Ballymacnab and Ballyhegan to qualify for the semi-final. The lads met Pearse Ógs again in the semi-final but unfortunately for the Shanes the city side triumphed again.

U14 Boys
Our U14 boys amalgamation of Naomh Lorcan O'Neills returned to league action on Tuesday evening with a game against Mullaghbawn. The O'Neills were the better side in the first-half, moving the ball well and taking some excellent scores. However, Mullaghbawn improved in the second-half and were the more clinical side in front goals and they went on to win the game by five points, 6 - 8 to 1 - 18. Next up for the lads is another league game on Tuesday night away to St Brigid's. All Shanes players are asked to meet at the no later than 6.45pm.

U14 Girls
The U14 girls had a great win away to Crossmaglen on Thursday night despite the extreme heat. Whilst both sides were depleted due to holidays, Shanes shone through in difficult conditions to come away convincing winners with a score-line of 1-05 to 6-15. There were great all round performances with some players filling in at different positions but their hard work paid off and this win keeps them in contention for the league. Leah McKeown was solid in defence and ably assisted by Orlagh McKenna and Kirsty Murphy. The midfield was ruled by Jessica Watters and Sorcha McDonnell whilst special mentions in the forward line go to Jade Beattie, Ciara Maginness and Sinead McDonnell. The U14 Championship final that was scheduled for Sunday 27th July was postponed by mutual consent with Clann Eireann and will be rescheduled for a date still to be confirmed. Training continues on Tuesday at 6.00pm at the field.

U12 Boys
Our U12 boys amalgamation of Naomh Lorcan O'Neills were due to be in league action on Saturday afternoon but the game was called off at the last minute.

U12 Girls
Our U12 girls are scheduled to play their championship semi-final on Sunday 3rd August so it is vitally important that all girls attend training on Tuesday evening at 6.00pm at the field.
