Aughlisnafin club notes

April 21, 2014

Officials and Players from Aughlisnafin GAC and Mitchels GAC join forces to promote the OReilly Transport Club Down Allstars.
The U14s continued their good run of form with a well deserved win against Darragh Cross. The visitors were on top during the opening exchanges but three goals from Cathal Murphy for the second game in succession gave the 'Fin the platform to build up a four point lead at the short whistle and in doing so turning around a six point deficit. The other scores coming from the captain Oran Flanagan 2-3 and the impressive Ruari King 0-1. Great defensive work from Haynes, Allen, Quinn, Casement and Matthews in keeping Darragh scoreless in that same period was also key.

Half time score Aughlisnafin 5-4 Darragh Cross 4-3

The 'Fin continued where they left off in the first half with points from Jamie Allen, Ruari King (2), Oran Flanagan and Adam Lenaghan. Jamie Allen also saw his effort on goal well saved by the Darragh keeper. Darragh Cross to their credit kept the scoreboard ticking over and in a period of dominance they scored three goals without reply which put them two points up with four minutes remaining. The 'Fin showed tremendous character to re-group and goals from Flanagan and King swung the lead again just before the long whistle. Ruairi Quinn was unlucky to see his rasping drive flash agonisingly wide in that same period as the 'Fin finished strongly.

Final score Aughlisnafin 7-9 Darragh Cross 7-5

It was a truly herculean effort by the lads and every single player played his part. The seven U12's on the squad again showing their worth to the team. After two hard games they currently sit third in Division 2 behind Castlewellan & Liatroim. Next game is away to Carryduff B on Monday 28th April. But before then the lads go to Newry for the Féile Peil na nÓg on Easter Monday.

Team: M Croskery, C Haynes, J Allen (0-1), C Matthews, L Casement, J Matthews, R Quinn, O Flanagan (3-4), R King (1-3), C Murphy (3-0), A Lenaghan (0-1), C King, A Flanagan Subs: E Lyttle (For A Flanagan), P O'Hare (for C King), R Walsh (for M Croskery), M Croskery (for Rory Walsh)

The Seniors were in action twice over the past week. On Monday a weakened 'Fin side suffered a reversal away to Ardglass going down 1-17 to 0-3. They will rue a missed penalty just before the interval to make it a two point game at half time. Ardglass went on to control the second half.

On Saturday afternoon with a few players back into the fold Mitchels had to work hard for their win. In fact only for time running out the 'Fin could well have earned an unlikely share of the spoils. The first half was a closely contested affair with two Ciaran Rice free kicks giving the Fin the lead 0-2 to 0-1 by the 15th minute. But Mitchels finished the half strongly and got the cushion of a goal not long before the short whistle while adding a further two points.

Half time Aughlisnafin 0-2 Mitchels 1-3.

Upon the restart the visitors picked up where they left off and fashioned two more points, one from a free. Mitchels then bagged a second goal to lead by ten points with 15 minutes to go. A brilliant point blank save by the 'Fin keeper Moe McClean was the turning point in the match as his team mates rallied to hit 1-4 without reply. The Newry side struggled to contain the strong running of Shane Mooney and James Brannigan as the 'Fin dominated the last quarter holding them scoreless for the remainder of the match. Brannigan sent over a superb point with Ciaran Rice sending over his third free of the match. Two points followed from Paul Flanagan and a Sean Willoughby goal left it a three point game with five minutes to go. Breannain McComiskey saw his effort on goal smack of a Mitchels player for a '45 which Rice sent wide. The 'Fin kept driving forward to try and rescue the game and they thought they had an opportunity from a free only for the match official Ned Morgan calling time before the ball went dead. Mitchels will have been glad to hear the full time whistle although probably deserved the points on the balance of play over the hour. The 'Fin defence of McClean, Boden, Flanagan, Murphy and McDonald worked hard to curb a dangerous Mitchels forward division. Willoughby, Mooney, McComiskey and Rice all putting in a good shift but found tough resistance from the Reds. Quinn, Lynch and Keown also tried hard throughout.

Final score Aughlisnafin 1-6 Mitchels 2-6. Next game is away to Kilclief this Friday evening at 7.15 pm.

Aughlisnafin Ladies were also in action on Saturday and competed well with visitors Louginisland for long periods of the game. At half time the visitors led 1-3 to 0-3 with Claire McShane (0-2) and Amanda Maginn on target for the 'Fin. The 'Blues' ability to find the net on three occasions ultimately was the difference between the teams. Loughinisland added 2-3 to their tally in the second half with the 'Fin tagging on 0-3. A third point of the game from McShane, a second from Maginn and the third point coming from substitute Sileen McDonald. Final score Aughlisnafin 0-6 Loughinisland 3-6.
