Match Reports
Senior Football
Teconnaught v An Riocht & An Riocht v Carryduff
An Riocht travelled to Teconnaught for the first time in some thirty years last year and came away victors by 1-13 to 0-7 after a patchy display, goal a game man Darren White kept up his scoring record.
An Riocht had no difficulty in defeating a poor Carryduff team at Dunavil on Saturday, 2-13 to 0-14. The home side scored all but two points from play while the visitors were reliant on frees for the majority of theirs.
Carryduff started ok with wing backs Conor Cassidy and Conor McCullough advancing for points apiece before An Riocht prospered in the looseness of the play and went seven two in front adding a cracking fifteenth minute goal from Paddy Cole for an eight point advantage after an incisive, pacey build up.
Much of the home side's dominance was built around the midfield brilliance of Darren Doyle who gave an exhibition of high fielding throughout the first half and by the break they led 1-11 to 0-6.
An Riocht dropped their intensity for the second period but in the fortieth minute grabbed their second goal when Darren White rescued a shot drifting wide and stepped inside his marker before shooting low to the net to put the result beyond any doubt. Neil Doran crashed a shot off the bar and over late on.
So with a fifth of the campaign over inside just eight days An Riocht have three wins from three outings but have big scoring league leaders Ballymartin up next at Pats Road which is sure to require a more sustained performance over the sixty minutes.
Senior Camogie
An Riocht v Ballela 'B'
The Senior Camogs had their second league of the year, at home to Ballela, and recorded their second win on a 4-10 to 2-4 score line. The visitors got off to a good start scoring two early goals, however An Riocht fought back putting over points and grabbing goals to lead at the break 1-7 to 2-3 and remained in front for the rest of the game to finish with a clear victory 4-10 to 2-4. Strong defensive play limited Ballela to a solitary point in the second half while Janie Magee and Nicole Farrell took their goals tally to two each. Aine Fearon and Danielle Higgins were most impressive for the winners.
Team: Claire Connor, Clara Killen, Louise Rodgers, Ciara Cunningham, Marie Trainor, Nicole Kelly, Colleen Fearon, Noelle Fearon, Aine Fearon, Carrie Killen, Maria Higgins, Danielle Higgins, Nicole Farrell, Janie Magee, Sarah Rodgers.
Subs: Joanna Sloan, Hayley McDowell, Cailin Cunningham
U18 Football
Saval v An Riocht
An Riocht just edged an entertaining opening minor football league fixture at Saval by 5-6 to 3-8. Stephen McDowell helped himself to a well taken goal getting in on the end of a Darragh Campbell effort which fell short and keeper Stephen Doran stroked over a fifty after a brilliant four man move was denied by the home keeper. Saval settled and were level by the end of the first quarter thanks to their first goal and a second soon after helped them to a five point lead before Aidan Sloan fisted an An Riocht goal and with the last kick of the half Stephen McDowell tied it at 2-4 apiece.
An Riocht dominated on the restart but four one on one with the keeper yielded no score before battling midfielder Ben Rafferty lofted over a point. Though Conor Clarke placed a shot wide of the keeper for a third An Riocht goal, other chances went abegging and Saval pulled two points back at the other end. However with six minutes remaining substitute Dane Matthews put Darragh Campbell in for a fourth goal and An Riocht looked safe. Saval had other ideas and 1-2 in two minutes set up a nervy finale but as the home side pressed for an equaliser Conor Clarke broke forward and soloed through to plant his second goal with the last kick of the match for a creditable away victory.
Team: Stephen Doran 0-1, Aaron Eastwood, Liam Rodgers, Andrew Harper, John Paul Farrell, Kory Colgan, Aidan Sloan 1-0, Ben Rafferty 0-1, Jack Walker, Ronan White, Deaglan Morgan, Stephen McDowell 1-2, Darragh Campbell 1-1, Michael O'Rourke, Conor Clarke 2-1. Subs Thomas Sloan, Marc Rooney, Dane Matthews, Christopher Morgan.
U16 Football
An Riocht v Bosco
The U16 Footballers began their league campaign with a one point win over visiting Newry Bosco. Scores were at a premium in the first half and An Riocht trailed 1-2 to 1-4 at the interval. It could have been worse but for two decent saves from Thomas Sloan and good blocking from Paul Kearney and Dane Matthews. Paddy McComiskey scored the opening goal off a Conor Clarke pass. An Riocht were much better on the restart and scored an additional 2-3 by the fortieth minute, midfielders Conor Clarke and Liam Rodgers advancing for goals apiece. Midway through the half Bosco countered to good effect with their second goal but Caomhan Campbell grabbed An Riocht's fourth at the second attempt after the keeper had parried his first shot and Paddy McComiskey and Conor Clarke added points to push An Riocht eight clear, 4-7 to 2-5, though other chances were not taken. Bosco finished strongly with 1-4 without reply but An Riocht held on for the narrowest of wins, 4-7 to 3-9. Others to catch the eye for the winners were Michael Harper, Daniel Hardy and Shane Cunningham in defence.
Team: Thomas Sloan, Michael Harper, Shane Cunningham, Eoin Sloan, Daniel Hardy, Paul Kearney, Conor Clarke 1-2, Liam Rodgers 1-1, Marc Rooney 0-1, Dane Matthews, Ronan Campbell 0-1, Jack Rafferty 0-1, Patrick McComiskey 1-1. Subs Caomhan Campbell 1-0, John Joe Eakins, Matthew Carvill.
