An Riocht club notes
April 14, 2014
The GAA Social Initiative group for older men continued with a trip to Dail Eireann last week when they met with Presidential candidate Senator David Norris; John O'Mahony TD, the former Mayo GAA manager; the colourful independent TD Mick Wallace; and Pat Rabitte TD, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources. Thanks to Seamus Kirk Louth TD and PJ Bradley for arranging the visit. The group also visited Trinity College Dublin to view the Book of Kells and the Brian Boru Exhibition on the millennia of the Battle of Clontarf.
On Monday Clare from the County Down Rural Community Network was present with window box kits as part of the Men's Sheds programme and she is back each Monday at 11am so if you have a project or an interest you would like to see developed then drop in and get involved, also there is a visit being arranged to view Dundalk Men's Sheds project taking in indoor bowls at Cooley.
South Down Family Health Initiative instructors will be attending the club at 12.30pm on Wednesday to assist with fitness programmes for adults, come along if you want a hand, it's free.
You do not have to have played Gaelic Games to take part in the Social Initiative.
The next edition of our periodical bulletin 'Sideline View' will be out for Easter.

Bi-annual General Meeting
Next Wednesday, 23rd April, An Riocht will break new ground by holding our first ever half yearly general meeting.
At our AGM which takes place off season in October we get a minimum attendance of adult players, parents of underage players or supporters and it is hoped that by having a bi-annual meeting at the start of the playing season we will get a better representation of these key groups as the playing season is a time when they are most about the club. There will be no training or matches on this date.
All club officers and sub-committees are to do a short written report on their activities in the six months since the last AGM and on what they have planned for the six months to next AGM.
This meeting which will last approx. 90 minutes will provide transparency; general meetings are often not very exciting for members, but it is imperative that every player aged 16+, parents of juveniles and genuine supporters attend on this one night.
It is also intended to produce a Club Handbook for distribution on club policies and procedures.
Matches
Senior Football
An Riocht v St Johns
The Senior Footballers got their season off to a winning start with a 4-13 to 1-11 win over visiting St Johns on Friday night. After a sluggish start two goals inside a minute settled An Riocht and though the visitors never gave up, An Riocht had too much know how to let the result slip with all six starting forwards getting on the score board. The strength of the bench was evident in the second half and hopefully this performance can be built upon for more difficult games ahead.
Thanks to those who officiated on Friday, hopefully others will play their part and step forward on Saturday at the next home game.
Team: Brendan McVeigh, Paul Sherry, Paul Allen, Conor McVeigh, Liam McVeigh, Deaglan O'Reilly, Kory Colgan, Paul Murney 0-1, James Cunningham, Declan Doyle 1-3, Chris Killen 0-2, Rory Cunningham 1-1, Paddy Gartland 0-2, John Clarke 0-1, Darren White 1-0.

Senior Camogie
Kilcoo v An Riocht
An Riocht Senior Camogs won their first match 3-11 to 4-1 in Kilcoo on Monday past. At half time An Riocht led by five, 1-6 to 1-1, and adapted better to the wet conditions to push on after the break for a convincing victory.
Team: Joanna Sloan, Niamh McDowell, Nicole Kelly, Ashling Clarke, Danielle Higgins, Ciara Cunningham, Noelle Fearon, Marie Trainor, Colleen Fearon, Aine Fearon, Emma Jayne Magee, Carrie Killen, Sarah Rodgers, Maria Higgins, Nicole Farrell.

Reserve Football
An Riocht v Bredagh
An Riocht Reserves beat visiting Bredagh 0-11 to 0-10 on Sunday. The first half was an end to end affair with An Riocht ahead at the break by 0-7 to 0-4 after some stylish play characterised by long kick passing. Bredagh had much the better of the third quarter and after forcing four fifties in quick succession narrowed the deficit to the minimum before An Riocht captain Brian Sloan came up with two late points to provide some needed breathing space and though the city side finished strongly An Riocht had done just enough to collect the league points on offer.
Team: Brendan Allen, Declan Clarke, Michael Clarke, Ryan Clarke; John O'Rourke, Aidan O'Hanlon, Gareth O'Neill, Brian Sloan 0-2, Darren Doyle, Stephen McVeigh, Noel McArdle 0-3, Neil Doran, Aidan McVeigh 0-1, Paddy Cole 0-5, Damian Sherry.
Subs Stephen Doran for Brendan Allen, Joe McCartan for Noel McArdle, Deaglan Morgan for John O'Rourke, Michael O'Rourke for Aidan McVeigh, Ryan Spiers for Damian Sherry, Gerard Keenan for Darren Doyle, Stephen Corr for Gareth O'Neill, Chris Cunningham for Ryan Clarke, Sean McArdle for Stephen McVeigh, Aidan Sloan for Neil Doran. Black Card Ryan Clarke for Michael Clarke.
U14 Football
Baileghlas v An Riocht
The U14 Footballers made the short journey to Pats Road to play Baileghlas on Monday and lost out on a 4-16 to 1-15 score line. An Riocht were slow to settle and left themselves too much to do in the later stages of the match but there were enough good performances to suggest better results lie ahead; again there was a good representation of people out in support of the boys including adult players in charge.
Team: John Joe Eakins, Philip Curran, Eoin Sloan, Christopher Flanagan, Ronan Campbell, Matthew Carvill, Caomhan Campbell, Cormac Clarke, Ryan Mackey, Jack Rodgers, Aidan Gribben, William Harper, Ross Colgan, Conor Kelly, Reece Flanagan, Curtis Flanagan.
U12 Camogie Blitz
An Riocht attended the U12 Camogie blitz in Ballygalget winning four matches v Ben Dearg, Clonduff, Castlewellan and Mayobridge and losing to the hosts, Ballygalget. Thanks to everyone for their help in preparing and distributing the goodies. If you don't feel confident enough to help with the coaching, here is an opportunity for any parent to get involved with their child's development; see Shay or Jody or any of the Mol An Oige team.
