There was much at stake around the country today as the last round of the national football league took place.

Great drama unfolded, with a number of key issues resolved in nail-biting fashion.

Who would join Derry and Cork in the Division One semi-finals? The hopefuls were Tyrone, Mayo, Dublin and Kerry. Tyrone and Dublin met in Omagh and the winners of this one would be guaranteed a semi-final ticket.

Who would win promotion from Division Two? Monaghan and Donegal could move into the top tier with even draws against Galway and Armagh respectively, but Meath and Down were ready to pounce on any slip-ups. One from Laois, Galway and Armagh would be relegated to the third division...

In Division Three, where Cavan and Roscommon had long since been promoted and Offaly were relegated last weekend, we had a novel relegation shoot-out between Wexford and Longford at Wexford Park.

And there was one promotion place up for grabs in Division Four: Tipperary had already earned their place in the third division and Clare would join them there if they won in Antrim. Should the Banner County flounder, Wicklow were aiming to take advantage by winning away to Tipp.
