On Saturday 21st September An Ríocht GAA Community Club will undertake a walk, run & cycle to Croke Park Dublin, home of the Gaelic Athletic Association, via the traditional route, emulating Down’s journeys to 5 Sam Maguires raising money for youth development and three charities of major significance to our community. Each of our 448 registered members, family, friends and the wider community are invited and encouraged to get involved by walking, running or cycling all or a part of the route and by raising much needed funds for these good causes. Everyone is also most welcome to come along tonight for the Official Launch.

In the u14 Gaelic Rostrevor v An Ríocht, we won 8-14 to 2-7.

 

In the u14 Camogie An Ríocht v Dromara, we won a hugely entertaining game by 9-7 to 9-5.Team: Lauren Marsh, Alicia Clare, Summer Clare, Niamh Hardy, Cerys Finnegan, Bobbi Jo Campbell, Kelcie Curran, Lucia Higgins, Orla McBurney, Caitlin Harper, Annie McAleenan, Anna Quinn, Sarah Leigh Sloan, Annalise White, Sarah Higgins, Mya Campbell, Zoe Gannon.

 

In a physically tough but sporting Senior Camogie match between An Ríocht and Liatroim, we lost by a point, 2-12 to 5-4. In an encouraging performance An Ríocht still conceded too many soft goals but our striking was well improved, and we were much more focused going forward and now just need to sharpen up on our first touch ahead of the big Championship test coming up.

Liatroim goaled early on but An Ríocht hit back with well taken points from Lauren Clarke, Sophie Bowater and Orla McAlinden to draw level only to concede a second goal. Maria Higgins and Carrie Killen replied with points apiece but Colleen Fearon was unfortunate to see her shot come back off the bar before the visitors struck for two further goals in as many minutes, 0-5 to 4-1. An Ríocht showed good resilience to bounce back outscoring Liatroim 1-3 to 0-1 in the closing stages of the half, Carrie Killen with three points and Lauren Clarke a cracking goal. At the break the score was An Ríocht 1-8 Liatroim 4-2.

An Ríocht pushed-on on the restart with another Carrie Killen free and a Colleen Fearon goal briefly edging us ahead. Midway through the half, Liatroim fired home 1-1 to go a goal clear but points from Carrie Killen and Tiarna Donnan made it a one-point game approaching an exciting finale. Liatroim stretched it out to two before a Patrice Matthews point reeled them in to a minimum deficit but despite plenty of pressure An Ríocht could not conjure another score and were left disappointed by the result but encouraged by the performance.

 

In the Senior Gaelic An Ríocht v Glenn, we had two great saves from Stephen Doran to thank for collecting the league points that will leave us clear of the relegation play offs. On Friday we can become the only team to complete a league double over table toppers Carryduff when we visit Belfast.

 

An Ríocht took part in the Atticall u10 Gaelic tournament.

 

At the Ulster u16 Camogie Blitz in Cookstown, An Ríocht played four matches against inter-county opposition in Creggan, Brockagh, Derrytresk and Bridini Oga and while we ran players on and off so everyone got plenty of game time and we may not have won any, there was definite potential evident among this group of girls. Well done to players and coaches on participating in this new tournament.

 

At the Premier Reserve Championship Burren v An Ríocht, we lost 5-17 to 4-6.

 

The u8 & u10 Camogie Blitzes in Ballygalget were postponed due to rain. The return games in Cooley have been confirmed for Sunday 11th August.

 

The Camogie Senior Championship Semi-final, An Ríocht v Portaferry takes place at 7.30pm in Drumaness on Wednesday 7th August.

 

The Men’s Shed are making plans for the autumn with registration for the Council’s ‘Community Growing Spaces’ programme and the Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Working to become Dementia Friendly’. If you may be interested in getting involved with the Men’s Shed call out any Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 11am and 1pm.

 

The Youth Gardening project proved very popular in last week’s Summer Scheme programme (photos) as did the trips to Mount Panther Fun Farm and Funtasia Water Park.

 

There is a push on to sell the unsold Home Bingos each week, if anyone can take as few as five bingos (£10) a week and sell them on then it would be a huge help; all the profit from Home Bingo goes to Camogie Coaching & Lifestyle programmes.
