Down’s Kevin McKernan says there’s “still plenty to improve on” for the Mourne men as they came towards the home stretch of their Allianz League campaign.

Paddy Tally’s men currently lead Division 3 after four wins from five games and McKernan insists that the group’s sole focus is on the next assignment against Carlow in Round 6 the weekend after next.

“We’ve avoided talk of tables. There have been draws and last-gasp winners in this league,” the Burren clubman told The Irish News.

“It’s so tight. People think for a team like Down to be in Division 3, they’re just going to come back up straight away with convincing wins, that isn’t the case.

“They are tight, dogged games but it’s great for this team to win tight games and travel across the country because those journeys and overnight stays build character in a team. So it’s looking positive and hopefully we can push on for another win against Carlow.”

He added: “We’re doing a lot of good stuff but there is still plenty to improve. We can take positives from two of the games where we won them late (Sligo and Westmeath) – but a bounce of a ball and things could have been totally different.”
