The Foundation Hurling Award was postponed due to a bereavement and is rescheduled for 6.30pm on Wednesday 6th March; to coach Camogie in An Ríocht you need to have completed this course.

Beth, Lorna and Rory began their Youth Leadership course on Wednesday past, good luck.

The Ladies monthly get-together consisted of a story telling event with Liz Weir.

The Fund-Raising planning group met last week and have set themselves a target of securing pitch side advertising boards during the month of March ahead of the commencement of the Senior Leagues. The board is 8’ x 3’ computer generated and is provided by the Club to the advertiser’s specification as regards colours, design etc. The playing fields at Dunavil are home to An Riocht’s teams in Camogie and Football from U6 to Masters, seventeen in total playing an average of three hundred home matches a year. It is also used extensively by St Colmans PS, Grange PS and St Louis Grammar School & also by Down Camogie, Down Football and Down Ladies Football teams of all ages. Dunavil is the only pitch in Down to offer spectators both covered seated and covered terraced stands which has increased demand for use of the pitch. In the recent past An Riocht has hosted adult and juvenile Club Championship matches in Football & Camogie; Senior Club League playoffs and finals; Down u15, u17, Minor, u21 and Senior teams; Down Vocational Schools matches including Finals; Ulster Colleges football fixtures and All Ireland Schools Camogie Semi-Finals. Planning has just been secured for a safe floodlit walk way around the perimeter of our ten-acre site which is sure to draw even more members of the public to our facilities. The grounds at Dunavil have been regularly recognised with Awards for presentation and at the recent Ulster GAA Presidents Award was named Down GAA Club Ground of the Year. As well as your pitch side advertising board, we will carry your advertisement on our new website and within our community building. All subscription will go towards the running costs of our teams which cater for boys and girls aged from four to fifty.

The u16 footballers played a friendly with a Drumgath/Annaclone selection.

The Cumann Na mBunscoil Boys Football Finals took place at Dunavil on Friday; the Girls Finals are scheduled for 22nd March.

Well done and thanks to Tara, Paula, Barney, Conor, Clara, Gerard and Thomas who gave  up their Saturday to complete the Ulster GAA Elevate Level 2 Award at Garvaghy Centre of Excellence in Tyrone. Elevate offers clubs a higher level of expertise across a range of areas from Leadership and Management; Club Planning and Marketing; Financial Management and Fundraising; Capital Projects and Partnerships.

At the u14 footballers pre-season tournament at Fintona Pearses, An Riocht played matches with Bellaghy, Fintona, Moy, Tattyreagh and Errigal Ciaran. Thanks to Fintona for the invite.

As part of Seachtain Na Gaeilge, Conradh na Gaeeilge Boirche Iochtar screened a wonderful Irish language animation film at Dunavil on Saturday free of charge, and the children also got popcorn and juice for a real cinema experience.

The u12 footballers braved the inclement weather for a match v St Johns on Sunday morning.

Young people from KYC attended the EA Mournes Inter-club project at Greenhill YMCA last weekend where planning for the upcoming inter-club cultural programme took place.

Thanks to Francis Killen for the donation of ten young ash trees which are now planted on the new ground and going forward we want to be making our own hurls in 20 or 25 years, so our youngest players now will one day play using an An Ríocht home grown hurl, like a time-capsule that we can all watch growing.

Spring is almost upon us when the Dunavil grass receives its first cut of the year and the white lines go down on the freshly mown pitches, the ball catch nets are pulled back and new stanchions go up on the goal posts which are painted brilliant white and there’s plenty of strimming and new signage being erected; being named best kept ground in the county brings its responsibilities, if you can help, then do.

We are trying to recruit a Volunteer Recruitment Officer whose main duties include to audit & document existing volunteer roles; identify new roles that need to be created; recruit & induct new volunteers; be the main point of conduct for volunteers within the club; support volunteers in their role; organize training or workshops as required for volunteers; promote, thank & reward volunteers for their work. A lot of this is already being partly done so an important part of the role will be to consolidate the current position and enable improvements where possible. If interested, contact any committee member.

There is an ‘Income Generation & Building Capacity Conference’ later in March which will provide advice and support on how to generate more income for the club with an opportunity to learn about funding opportunities, how to maximise income within our current position and better promote our events. This conference is free, supported by Sport NI and looks an ideal opportunity for our new Fund-Raising group.

Down GAA will host a Youth Forum on Saturday morning, 23rd March, it would be good for the club and also for some of our young people to be in attendance; if you might be interested see Childrens Officers Joanne or Barney for more details but don’t leave it late as places are sure to fill up early.
