Donegal are bidding to have full back Neil McGee freed to play in the Ulster SFC final against Fermanagh.

The two-times All Star defender was dismissed during Sunday's facile semi-final defeat of Down for allegedly making contact with Connaire Harrison's back with his knee.

Already on a yellow card, he was subsequently shown a straight red by referee Anthony Nolan, whose attention was drawn to the incident by a linesman.

But Donegal County Board chairman Mick McGrath confirmed in The Irish Independent that the punishment and proposed suspension will be appealed in an attempt to free McGee to play in the novel Anglo-Celt Cup decider on Sunday week: "From watching the video of the matter, we believe that we have the basis for an appeal."
