Down Senior Ladies

The girls continuing their national league fixtures this week, the rescheduled round 3 match against Longford on Thursday was called off due to unforeseen circumstances and has been refixed for March. The girls played Offaly in round 4 of the LIDL National Football League yesterday and showed a lot of character. Some of the girls have had an extremely difficult week outside of football and to still turn up yesterday and put up a fight as they did is a credit to them. The game was far from their best performance, with Down lagging behind 3 points at half time: Down 0.04 Offaly 0.07. Yet the work rates the girls had to change the game in the second half with a fantastic goal from Natasha Ferris, Bryansford and the resilience shown to the end will stand by the team as they grow from strength to strength in the rest of the league. Down Ladies Senior Manager Ryan McShane noted "we can be happy that the team are performing and getting points on the board, but the league table is extremely close... every game is vital so we will concentrate on Leitrim now for next week and get ready to go again." Big shout out to Conor Curran RGU and Sean Sherry Carryduff who carried out linesmen duties, much appreciated.

On Sunday 4th March Lidl Ladies NFL Division 3 Round 5 the girls travel to Leitrim with kick off at 2.00pm.

U18/Minors - BORN 2000/2001 ONLY

The build up to the championship continued with an away trip to Wicklow at the weekend, after a sluggish start the girls found their rhythm and played some fantastic football. With attacking flair and dogged defensive work that put the host under extreme pressure. It was a fantastic squad performance with everyone playing their part in a well-earned win. With a final score of 11.03 to 5.09. We would like to thank Wicklow for the game and hospitality. See social media for photos!

Down U16 - BORN 2002 ONLY

U16 girls first championship game has been confirmed for Sunday 11th March at 2pm venue in Tyrone TBC. The girls have been fully committed to their preparations so hopefully all the hard work will show. Fundraising day this Saturday 3rd March when the squad will complete 'A Marathon of toe taps' it all kicks off at 10am in Ballykinlar. All support greatly appreciated. Many thanks to Ballykinlar for use of their facilities.

The U15's details will be published later today via WhatsApp and social media.

Down U14 - BORN 2004 ONLY

The Down U14 girls had an early start on Saturday morning, making the trip to Scotstown, in the heart of County Monaghan, to participate in the Ulster U14 Blitz, with a total of eight Ulster Counties taking part, allowing the ladies the opportunity to compete against the best teams in Ulster. This year, Down entered two teams. Down 1, in their opening game, played out an entertaining draw with both sides cancelling each other out. Next up for Down 1 was Antrim, who proved too strong, before they played some scintillating football to overcome Fermanagh. The group finished up with Down having to play a 21-yard free kick shoot-out against Cavan to determine who made it through to the semi-finals. This proved to be a tense affair, with both teams going toe to toe to finish 4 each after 5 kicks. The tension then moved up another notch with sudden death kicks, with Ciara McCullough bravely clinching victory for Down with Cavan missing their opportunity. Well done also to Caroline, Una, Nora, Jenna and Anna. Down 1 then played out a tough encounter with near neighbours Armagh, with the denial of a penalty for Down proving the difference in the end as the ladies went down by two points. Down 1 then proceeded into the plate final where they came up against Antrim, who they had played earlier in the day. This proved to be a much tighter affair with Down just getting pipped 0-2 to 0-1, after a titanic battle. Captain for Down 1 was the inspirational Kirsten Cunningham (Dundrum) who led from the front all day long.

Down 2 played fantastic football in their group stages accounting for Antrim in their opener despite being behind at half-time, before accounting for Derry and Fermanagh. Finishing top of their group, Down 2 then came up against Armagh in the semi-final. This was a very tight affair with Down emerging deserved winners with a one-point margin. Down then came up against a different Antrim side from the other group, this time losing out by the minimum after putting in a major shift. Well done to Ellie Carr (Mayobridge) who captained Down 2 and was a major thorn in opposing sides all day long. A big shout out to Martina McCafferty, All-Ireland winner with Down senior ladies in 2000, who co-managed Derry ladies against Down in the group game, where Martina now resides.

This blitz is superb preparation for the ladies as they now turn their focus to the first round of the championship on 10th March away to Fermanagh. Well done ladies on all the efforts to date and keep it going. See social media for photos!

Down U13 - BORN 2005 ONLY

Brilliant session held in St Malachys High school, Castlewellan on a cold crisp Saturday morning. Coaches and players have all learned a few things after last week's game and it was great to see the girls putting such a huge effort in again this week with a lot of fun thrown in for good measure. See social media for photos!
