Down star Caolan Mooney has admitted that he was a Tyrone fan and practically idolised Sean Cavanagh in his younger years.

This Sunday sees Mooney and his Rostrevor club mates line-up against Cavanagh's native Moy in the Ulster club intermediate football championship final at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh.

It'll be the second time this season the pair have clashed on a provincial final stage, with Tyrone having defeated Down in July to retain the Anglo-Celt Cup, and Mooney is very keen for a different outcome this weekend.

"From a very young age I was a big fan of Tyrone football," the former AFL player told The Irish News.

"When I was younger and naive, I supported Tyrone. Sean Cavanagh was everything I wanted to be - big physical…I wouldn't say quick, but he's not slow. He's definitely a role model for young boys, through the years I've looked up to him and he's had a lot of success.

"At the same time he's had a lot of defeats that he's come back and he had a great inter-county career. I'm sorry Sean, but I'm not letting you win on Sunday."
