Clinical Cloughaneely progress thanks to McBride goal spree

Gaeil Fhánada 1-13

Cloughaneely 5-5

Sharp shooting Cloughaneely progressed to the semi final stages of the Intermediate B championship in a repeat encounter of last year's final. Sean McBride was the hero with a hatrick of goals, all finished expertly at crucial stages of the game. Truth be told, Fanad were every bit a match for their opponents, they really dominated possession but Cloughaneely's eye for goal made it a bridge too far for the Fanad outfit. Fanad lined out a team that really includes the old cliche of youth and experience, Cathal Martin, Paddy McAteer, Seamus McAteer, Shaun McElwaine, Marty McAteer and senior manager Aidan McAteer can consider themselves the older heads while the younger contingent of Bernard Martin, Dan Little, Patsy Friel and Oisin McFadden can be happy with their contributions.

Fanad lined out with a relatively strong lineout. James didn't have the same commitment from the reserve lads this year as opposed to other years due to work/college commitments and emigration, but his side made a real fist of it. Marty McAteer kicked off the scoring from a free after five minutes, Marty was a real livewire throughout and was ably assisted by Paul Dougy Coyle. Another free from McAteer pushed Fanad into a two point lead with six minutes played. It took Coughaneely fourteen minutes to find their rhythm, Sean McBride driving over when there was a half chance of a goal on. McBride may only have had a handful of possessions over the hour but those contributions were huge in the end up. Cloughaneely then tied up the game through their corner forward. Paul Dougy Coyle landed a monster point to edge Fanad ahead after some patient build up play before disaster struck for Fanad, a long ball into the Fanad square sailed over Paddy McAteer's head and the Coughaneely midfielder done well to fist the ball to the net past Seamus McAteer in the Fanad goal. Coyle responded again for Fanad with a beauty from 45 meters, only for Cloughaneely to reply with another goal through McBride. Another long ball deceived Ronan McAteer and McBride drilled to the far corner with aplomb to give Cloughaneely a 4 point cushion. On came Oisin McFadden for the injured Shaun McElwaine and he got on plenty ball as the half closed out. McAteer jinked his way past three tackles to pop over from 30 meters before the scoring was closed out on the half by a McAteer free to leave just two points between the sides at half time, a position James and the lads would have been content with given the concession of two goals. Fanad also had the likes of Benny Callaghan, Conor McFadden, Fergal Friel, Kevin McElwaine, Stephen McGonigle and Patsy Friel to call upon, players with plenty experience and capable of changing a game.

HT:

Gaeil Fhánada 0-6

Cloughaneely 2-2

The second half started in the same vein as the first, both teams hit a couple of wides, including one from Coyle, before Cloughaneely tapped over the opening point on 36 minutes. Marty McAteer curled over from a tight angle to reduce the arrears. McBride then hit his second goal, turning on a sixpence and leaving Ronan McAteer in his wake before firing home at Seamus McAteer's near post. The delivery and finish was exceptional. Marty responded again for Fanad after Shaun McGovern was fouled before Patsy Friel and Fergal Friel entered the action to replace Rudi Feenstra and Paddy McAteer. Both players made an immediate impact, Patsy drove through the defence a number of times Although he was blown for over carrying a couple of times he did add an extra dynamic to the Fanad attack. Cloughaneely then tapped over another point from a tight angle before Fanad got their goal on 43 minutes. A miscue from McGovern ended up in the hands of Fergal Friel who sold his trademark dummy to the keeper before rolling the ball to the empty net. Fergal and Aidan McAteer were involved in a tussle with their opposite numbers leading up to the goal and Fergal done well to release his opponent from a headlock before tucking home. This left the score at 3-4 to 1-8 and all to play for. Fanad continued to dominate possession but a loose pass from Patsy Friel was turned over and this led to another goal for Cloughaneely, McBride again with an almost identical finish to his second. Seamus Coyle cantered forward to curl over only for Cloughaneely to respond with a point of their own when another goal was on. It was a strange spectacle as Cloughaneely really struggled for possession but managed to get in for goals on numerous occasions. Fergal Friel tapped over a free after he was fouled on his way to goal as the clock hit 50 minutes. Cloughaneely responded as they had done all evening with another goal, this time from their corner forward who finished well past McAteer in the Fanad goal. Credit to the Fanad men as they held their opponents scoreless in the final 12 minutes as they scored the final three points of the game. Coyle shot over when trying to manufacture a goal while Marty McAteer tapped over a free. McAteer then hooked a lovely point over his shoulder to leave four points between the sides. Fanad tried their best to carve out a goal but Cloughaneely stood strong, Paddy Joe Doohan was a rock at full back, Michael McGinley marshaled his backline well while Ciaran McCafferty performed well at half back. Ciaran Mor Gallagher also made a difference round the middle when introduced while Kevin Scanlon also broke up play at critical times. Referee James Connors then blew for time in what was an exciting encounter overall.

Fanad will be disappointed with the result and the concession of five goals, they perhaps should have deployed a sweeper or a man marker on McBride a bit earlier which could have made the difference. On the day, Seamus McAteer was composed with his kick outs throughout, Bernard Martin put his head where men dared to tread, Paul Dougy Coyle was a central figure to Fanad while up top Marty and Aidan McAteer never shied away from possession. The subs of Oisin McFadden, Patsy Friel, Fergal Friel made their presence felt too. For Cloughaneely, McBride stole the show and deservedly so.

U13 Girls Record Another Win

Gaeil Fhánada 4-1

Buncrana 0-1

Third win on the bounce for Tracey and her crew as they overcome Buncrana. Played in absolutely atrocious conditions, both teams must be credited for playing their part in a sporting game. The girls are now on a bit of a run and will hope to keep it going in the upcoming weeks.

All Ireland Football Final Tickets Draw

The draw took place at tonight's committee meeting. We had 51 people who applied for tickets and the following names came out: Ken Dempsey, Siobhan Coyle, Michael Doherty, Ronan McAteer, Bried Sweeney (Neil).

Fiona will be in contact with each of you in relation to collection and payment.

Congratulations and Good Luck!

Congratulations to Siobhan Coyle who took duty at an All Ireland Semi final on Saturday before returning to take charge of the County Junior B Championship Final in McCumhaill Park on Sunday. Siobhan was on line duty at the Ladies All Ireland semi final in Breffni Park, Cavan in a game where the Mayo ladies saw off the challenge of a very experienced Cork team. It shows the esteem in which our referee is held by the national body when she was appointed to such a high profile game which was televised by TG4.

On the home scene Siobhan was backed up by club umpires Shaun and John Patrick Coyle, Hughie Shiels and Kilkenny native Ann Marie Gibbons when she took to the Pitch in McCumhaill Park on Sunday. Supporters from St Mary's, Convoy and Pettigo were impressed at the fair manner that she officiated.

Siobhan has also been chosen to do the line for the Ladies All Ireland Final between Mayo and Dublin in Croke Park on Sunday September 24th. Another momentous day for Siobhan. Congratulations Siobhan, we look forward to seeing you represent the club in this fashion going forward.
