Intermediate Championship Round 3:
Gaeil Fhánada v Naomh Brid
Saturday 26th Aug 2017
Seniors - 7:00 PM
Reserves - 5.30PM
A must win game for our seniors as last weekend's defeat has left their championship hopes hanging by a thread. Fanad won the league fixture earlier this season by five points. A full match preview will be available on our Facebook page later this week.
County title for our U14 boys:
Our boys picked up their second underage medals of the season as they defeated Lifford in the C Championship Final in O'Donnell Park. Fanad proved too strong for Lifford in what was a one sided final.
Lifford started well getting the first score of the game, but Fanad responded well when Patrick Gallagher got a goal at the other end. Liam McGrenaghan got the next 3 scores in quick succession scoring 1-2. Brandon Friel then got his first point of his tally of six in the match. Fanad finished the half well with Cian Friel grabbing a goal and Aaron McConigley getting a point.
HT Score:
Gaeil Fhánada 4-5
Lifford 0-4
The second half was more of the same from Fanad with some great attacking moves and great scores with Callum McAteer and James McAteer grabbing points and Brandon and Liam adding to their tallys. The game finished with a James McAteer goal as his long range effort tipped just under in the crossbar into the back of the Lifford net. Lifford had long periods of possession during the game but Fanad's defence proved near impossible to break down with Conor McGarvey and Gerard Tam Sweeney in the heart of it and Aaron McConigley flying at wing back. All the forwards got involved in the game and there was some well worked team scores. It was an all round complete performance from the boys on the day with every man showing up on the occasion.
After the game captain Conor McGarvey accepted the winning trophy.
Full Time:
Gaeil Fhánada 6-12
Lifford 0-4
Well done to Manager Sean McElwaine, Coach Declan 'The Wreck' Coyle and to all the players involved

The pitch development committee would like to thank the local contractors who have completed works at the grounds to the highest standard.
We also wish to acknowledge all the volunteers who have given their time in ensuring that the facility has reached this stage of completion. Over the past few weeks a large number of volunteers have offered machinery as well as their skills and time completing a wide variety of jobs. Their work kerbing, concreting, fencing, strimming, installing stop nets and goal posts, painting, relining the pitch, etc ensured that the development continued to progress.
The next instalment of the draw is now due. This draw will provide the necessary funds to complete the project therefore we would appreciate your continued financial support.
Our vision has now become a reality and this project has certainly highlighted the community spirit we have in our parish.
Minor boys edge thrilling encounter with Glenswilly:
Our minor boys travelled to Glenswilly for a vital minor championship game yesterday evening. This was the lads final group game with all four teams, Gaeil Fhánada, Milford, Cloughaneely and Glenswilly in with a real chance of progression to the next stage, each team having taken two points from their opening two games.
The game was played in wonderful conditions in Glenswilly and was in the melting point from from the first minute until the last.
The opening exchanges were nervous, with Fanad holding possession but were unable to break down the strong Glen defensive structure. In fact the first quarter hour was played on the hosts terms, soaking up the Fanad pressure and moving forward quickly, Shane Mc Devitt being a constant threat for the home team. Mc Devitt hit the first score of the game from a free for the home side and they hit two sucker punches quickly after. Good build up play from the Glen centre forward created an opening and the ball was buried to the net from close range. The second goal proved to be a moment of controversy minutes later. Good build up play led to a shot at the target. It rebounded of the top of the post and fell into the arms of the grateful Glen centre forward. He struck for goal, the ball hitting of Eoin Mc Gonigle's ankle and up onto the crossbar and bouncing out. Neither umpire saw fit to award a goal but the referee called it from the 45 metre line. Despite Mc Gonigle's protestations the goal stood. Fanad were now in a spot of bother and faced into a seven point deficit in the must win championship encounter. Brandon Mc Clafferty offered the first glimmer of hope for Fanad, striking a nice score from the left wing. Fanad gained a platform in midfield from that were dominant on the scoreboard for the next period. John Friel was particularly lively and struck for a point before quick fire points from Bernard Mc Gettigan and a Mark Mc Ateer reduced the gap to three points. John Friel, who was having a very good first half had the next say, patient build up play finally lead to a pass inside to John. He shrugged off his marker and buried the ball to the back of the net. As often happens, a team loses momentum after striking for goal and Glen got a foothold in midfield for the final few minutes of the half and struck for the next two points. Half time: Gaeil Fhánada 1:04 Gleann Súilí 2:03
The second half was an absorbing encounter from the beginning, and it ebbed and flowed all the way to the final whistle. Fanad were level by the third minute, Shaun Kerr and Mark Mc Ateer both from play. Bernard Mc Gettigan slotted over a free two minutes later to put the Gaels into the lead for the first time. Mc Ateer broke the line minutes later to tee up a goal opportunity for Niall Shiels. The Glen keeper, Cian Randels pulled off a sensational save from Niall to prevent a certain goal. In the blink of an eye the home team broke forward and were awarded a score-able free from which they made no mistake. Both teams were giving everything for the cause by now with possession from kick outs becoming more vital as the game went on. After a period of patient play, Darren Mc Elwaine struck for a point in the twelfth minute to make the score 1:08 to 2:04. Both teams cancelled each other out out over the next few minutes before Glenswilly struck for the next two points, both in the space of a minute. What followed next was an absolutely sensational score from Mark Mc Ateer, he picked up the ball on the 45 and took on the Glen defence by himself, he was forced to an acute angle on the left hand side with three defenders applying serious pressure, Mark somehow managed to get his strike away which sailed between the posts to level the game for the fifth time. Glenswilly responded in kind, winning the kick out and moving up the field to fire over to take the lead again. Within a minute, the teams were level for the sixth time. Bernard Mc Gettigan swinging over a difficult free with the aid of the post. The game was going to the wire and fortunately the team showed great resilience in the final moments. The elusive Mark Mc Ateer struck for another brilliant score in the 26th minute dispossessing one of the Glen defenders. Some fantastic defending by both teams ensured no further score until the 31st minute. Second half sub, John Heraghty hit a fantastic cross field ball to Josh Mc Ateer in at full forward. Josh took the ball and played it to Mark Mc Ateer who squeezed it over the bar. Glenswilly retained possession from the kick out and broke forward. They were awarded a free from which they tried to work a goal. A powerful drive went too high and went over the bar. They had one final opportunity and gained possession but couldn't work through the Fanad defence and Fergus Friel finally intercepted before a foul was called. The Fanad free was to be the final play of the game. Full time: Gaeil Fhánada 1:12 Gleann Súilí 2:08.
Great credit to both teams for the commitment shown until the final whistle. Bernard's lads showed great spirit and courage to come out as victors having been seven points in arrears at one stage. Jonny Gallagher put in a strong performance at full back, while James Kerr and Ciarán Coyle worked exceptionally hard from their wing forward positions. Brandon Mc Clafferty had a solid hour with John Friel and Mark Mc Ateer making great contributions on the scoreboard. However, as always it was very much a team performance. Glenswilly can also be very happy with their team performance and were well served by Shane Mc Devitt and keeper Cian Randels who was exceptional under the high ball all night. Our lads now move on to a county quarter final and await news of who they'll face next. Well done to the team and management for a really good display.

Reserves:
Our reserves lost out in their Championship fixture on a scoreline of 4-8 to 0-16. As the scoreline suggests, the concession of four goals was always going to be a tough ask but the lads did battle gamely and had a few goal chances themselves at the end. Marty McAteer starred for Fanad.
Dubious penalty the talking point as Naomh Columba overturn Fanad in entertaining affair:
Gaeil Fhánada 0-10
Naomh Columba 1-10
A very dubious penalty five minutes into the second half was the turning point and ultimately the difference as Naomh Columba overturned a half time deficit to leave the Fanad peninsula with two valuable championship points. James Gallagher made a fine block on the roving Christopher Byrne as he bore down on goal but was adjudged to have fouled the big full forward. It was certainly a harsh call on both Gallagher, who had a solid afternoon, and the Fanad side who's backroom team were incensed. The in form Paddy Byrne drilled the penalty home to give the men from Glen some breathing space.
The game was played at a high pace with a real championship feel to it. There was a slight breeze which seemed to help the teams playing into the changing room goals. Glen played with this advantage in the first half and took a while to settle. Both teams appeared nervous and cagey and were guilty of some poor wides in this period. Paddy Byrne opened his account with a huge free from 50m to settle the Glen nerves. Some poor shooting from Michael Sweeney, Niall Carr, Seami Nanny and Eoghan Carr was a sign Fanad were still stuggling to settle into the game before Seami Nanny opened his account with a free after Jimmy Coyle was fouled. Nanny pointed another free (which he won himself) only for the Doherty twins, Paul and Philip, to tag on points to put Glen a point ahead. Seami Nanny curled over a beauty from wide on the right only for Philip Doherty to curl over after a fine attacking move from Naomh Columba. Mark Friel then pointed to tie the game at four points apiece and there really was nothing to separate the sides. Fanad's build up play was more patient that their opponents, with Eoghan Carr seeing a lot of ball over the half. A fine ball inside from Shaun McElwaine found Michael Sweeney who was fouled as he turned inside, Seami Nanny arrowed over the resulting free as referee Mark Brown called for half time.
Fanad would have been relatively happy with the scoreline given the wides and unforced errors they made.
HT:
Gaeil Fhánada 0-5
Naomh Columba 0-4
The second half started the same as the first, Fanad winning the hop but missing a scoring chance before Christopher Byrne got the ball rolling with a fine point from close range. Fanad did have a chance to push ahead but Seami Nanny skewed wide from a free. Then came the penalty decision, Gallagher appeared to nip in with a fine stop on Byrne but referee Brown had other ideas and awarded the penalty, which was tucked away by Paddy Byrne. Seami Nanny drove through and pointed to reduce the margin only for Pauric Cunningham to fire over a free after a foul by Paddy Heraghty. This left the game in the balance at 1-6 to 0-6 and to be fair, few would have wrote off Fanad at this stage. Eoghan Carr had two identical efforts drift wide at this crucial stage while Niall Carr also hoofed wide. Seami Nanny was also tripped as he bore down on goal by corner back Barry Carr but the free was only deemed a yellow card offence. It certainly was a very tactical foul as Nanny had left a trail of Glen players in his wake. Seami Coshia with a superb free off the outside of his boot left the margin at two points but Glen responded ruthlessly through Pauric Ward and the impressive Philip Doherty who had a very industrious afternoon. Jimmy Coyle drove through to tap over to leave a goal between the sides but as they done before, Glen replied through Paul Doherty. Davitt Walsh then pointed, albeit through a fortunate bounce to leave three points between the sides again. Another Coshia free on 60 minutes meant Fanad were two in arrears as the clock entered injury time. However, Glen, as they done all afternoon, won their own kickout and attacked at pace. Philip Doherty had the chance to tap over but tried to work the goal. Byrne's attempted effort seemed to carry over the endline following a touch from a Glen player but the Glen umpire awarded a 45, which Byrne drilled over with ease. Fanad did have one attack left and opened up some space, however Oisin Shiels opted for a point which sliced wide and with that, referee Brown called for time.
Overall, the main difference between the teams was the clinical point taking from Glen versus the poor shooting from Fanad, which coincidentally happened in Fanad's last championship game. Glen also dominated kickouts in the second half which gave them a huge platform to build on, their counter attacking play was a joy to behold at times. Fanad will be disappointed having matched and indeed at times outplayed their opponents, but ultimately fell short. Their championship ambitions are now out of their hands but a win at home to Naomh Brid next week and results elsewhere going their way means they have a chance to progress to the quarter finals. For Glen, they can now look forward to a quarter final but have a final group game against Cloughaneely to come in what should be an absorbing tie.
Best on the day for Fanad was Jimmy Coyle, Seami Nanny and James Gallagher. For Glen, veteran Michael Maguire was influential, the Doherty twins were an absolute handful, while the Byrne's, Paddy and Christopher, stepped up when it mattered. Referee Mark Brown actually had a consistent hour outside the penalty call and foul on Nanny decision.
