Aodh Ruadh club notes

August 15, 2017

Football

Intermediate championship takes centre stage this Sunday, 20th August when Naomh Ultan are the guests in Father Tierney Park. The reserve games throws in at 1.30pm and is followed by the seniors at 3pm. It goes without saying we would like to see a big crowd up to get behind the teams as they continue their bid to bring a first every intermediate championship title to the club.

Under 16 training continues this Wednesday at 6pm. The PJ Roper Tournament takes place on Saturday in Father Tierney Park and commences at 11am. All players are to be at the park for 10am. We will have four teams taking part on the day so we need a good spread of food for the post tournament refreshments. A loaf of sandwiches, tray of buns or similar from ALL PLAYERS is absolutely essential. Help will also needed with catering in Aras. Commiserations to under 16 panel members Shane Gillespie and Eoin Doherty on just missing out on Buncrana Cup silverware. The pair played their part as Donegal earned a 2-8 to 1-10 win against Monaghan, however Tyrone were 1-6 to 1-9 victors in the final, with the Aodh Ruadh pair again both early subs from the bench.

The under 14s chalked up a 5-26 to 1-8 win over Killybegs to at Dunkineely on Monday evening to set up another Southern Divisional final meeting with Four Masters. It was a magnificent team performance by the Ernesiders, but a special word of mention has to go to man of the match Cian Rooney on a stand-out personal display of play-making in the half forward line. The Southern Divisional final will take place this Friday at 7pm with venue to be confirmed and a big, vocal showing of Ballyshannon support would be much appreciated. Elsewhere our young under 14 division 2 side showed immense reserves of steel and resolve to win their third leg play-off game against Bundoran and progress to the next round of the championship.

Under 10 training continues from 6.15pm to 7.15pm on Mondays and Fridays. The team are heading to Trillick this Saturday for an invitational blitz. We will meet at the Park at 8.45am and will be travelling to the Tyrone venue via bus.

Under 8 training continues as usual on Fridays at 6.15pm.

Ladies

The under 16s had an absorbing tussle with Termon on Sunday evening. The game was hard fought throughout, but Aodh Ruadh's determination ensured it was a battle right to the very end. Aodh Ruadh missed a number of chances before Brídín Maguire opened the scoring with a point five minutes in. The hosts continued to waste opportunities, while Termon made the most of theirs to net in the 12th and 14th minutes before adding a point nine minutes from the break to take a two goal lead. Aodh Ruadh halved the deficit when Caoimhe Keon hit the net with a blistering effort. A Brídín Maguire free and point from Cáit Gillespie were answered by points from Termon to leave it 1-3 to 2-3 at the break with all to play for. The game was evenly balanced again in the second half with Aodh Ruadh defence truly outstanding, particularly as the exchanges became progressively more physical. Termon tagged on three hard earning points before Caoimhe Keon got Ballyshannon's first point of the half on 48 minutes. Unfortunately Termon's response, which came five minutes from time, was a goal. Aodh Ruadh did add a Cáit Gillespie point, but it was Termon's shooting efficiency which saw them emerge winners on a 1-5 to 3-6 scoreline. The game represents another big step forward for the team with some truly heroic performances. Síofra Hughes marshalled the back line well with Aideen Walsh and Alicia Clyne magnificent. Once again Caitlin McGarrigle was simply different class at half back with Ana Keon giving it her all despite severe nail damage! Meanwhile both Eva Moore and Caoimhe Keon played through the pain barrier, epitomising the spirit of the team. Cáit Gillespie, Orla Keon and Leah O'Brien emptied the tank at half forward with Brídín Maguire, Sarah Jane Keon and Katherine McClay working hard in a congested Termon rearguard. Dearbhla McGuckin made a great contribution on her introduction with Laoise Kelly and Kelly Eves also playing their part. Milford is the next match on the schedule with fixture details to be confirmed. Before that we host Derrygonnelly for a challenge in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Thursdayat 7.30pm, players are to be at the park for 6.45pm.

The under 13 schedule has been released and Aodh Ruadh are in Division 1 along with Ardara, Buncrana, Dungloe, Fanad Gaels and Saint Eunan's. Our fixtures for the league section are as follows:

Saturday 26th August, 12 noon: Aodh Ruadh v Ardara

Saturday 2nd September, 12 noon: Buncrana v Aodh Ruadh

Saturday 9th September, 12 noon: Dungloe v Aodh Ruadh

Saturday 16th September, 12 noon: Aodh Ruadh v Saint Eunan's

Friday 22nd September, 7pm: Aodh Ruadh v Fanad Gaels

The team had their first challenges of the season over the past week, with good run outs for the large panel against Grange and Glencar / Manorhamilton. On Wednesday Cara Davitt and Evelyn Rose Gallagher were both very sporting and donned the Grange jersey to help even the numbers, going so far as to hit three points of the Saint Molaise's final total. In Manorhamilton younger players again showed up well with Anna McCaffrey, Ellie Danagher and Kelly Irwin performing promisingly, and Christina McCaffrey finishing with three points to her credit. The pre-season programme continues on Tuesday when the team take on Devenish in Garrison. The team will meet at the Park at 6pm before heading off. We will be taking cars to this one and we would appreciate the assistance of parents to help us get the team to the venue. No training on Wednesday.
