Seamus McEnaney has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace Rory Gallagher as Donegal football manager.

While outgoing U21 manager Declan Bonner remains favourite for the post, the Irish News is reporting that 'Banty' is in the frame despite being still in charge of Wexford. The Monaghan man led the Model County to promotion from Division 4 of the Allianz League last spring, but a disappointing championship campaign, coupled with the long commute from his Carrickmacross base to the South-East for training and matches, could prompt him to step down in the coming weeks.

Other names linked to the Donegal vacancy are former Down and Fermanagh manager Pete McGrath, current Donegal minor boss Sean Paul Barrett and Gary McDaid, who manages Michael Murphy's club, Glenswilly.
