Donegal begin preparations for the 2017 campaign with a SF challenge against Sligo this weekend.

The sides meet in Letterkenny on Sunday and Gallagher revealed that he will be using the game to run the rule over a number of young players added to the squad.

The senior players are on an extended break with many set to attend team mate David Walsh's wedding on Saturday afternoon.

Gallagher has brought in a number of new players to the squad as some of the older players have decided to call time on their inter-county careers.

"We had a gentle return to training last weekend and this will be a good opportunity for us," Gallagher told the Donegal Democrat.

"It will be a good opportunity for us to give the young fellas a run. Because many of our senior team will only be returning to training in January, our Dr McKenna Cup panel will be predominantly an under-21 squad.

"We felt that this would give the under-21 squad a good chance to have some preparation for the championship.

Sunday's game will take place at Coláiste Ailigh at 1.30pm and entrance will be €8 with all proceeds going to the college.
