Pitch perfect - not

Colm Boyle scores Mayo's second own goal in the All Ireland SFC final

Martin McHugh says the Croke Park pitch ruined the last two All-Ireland finals.

Rain on All-Ireland final day has contributed to two successive low-quality, error-strewn matches and the Donegal legend says GAA chiefs will have to do something about the playing surface at HQ:

"I don't know what is up with the Croke Park pitch, but it is becoming a real problem for the GAA," the Kilcar man writes in The Irish Daily Star. "Everything else about the All-Ireland final - the stadium, the organisation, the atmosphere - is great, but the pitch is letting the players down.

"I'd love to hear what the players and managers thought of it last Sunday. The chances of rain in September are high and it's clear the pitch can't cope with it for football at least.

"That's two years in a row we've had bad finals when it has rained and it's wrong to blame the skill factor of the players. These are the best players in the country and, anyway, rain shouldn't spoil a game."
