Jim McGuinness has rubbished reports that he was drafted in by Stephen Rochford to help set Mayo up defensively for today's All-Ireland SFC final against Dublin.
RTE analyst Martin Carney, a former Mayo and Donegal footballer, claimed in a radio interview with Matt Cooper on Today FM on Friday that the 2012 All-Ireland winning Donegal manager had advised the Connacht outfit on how they should combat Dublin's attacking brand of football.
But the man himself set the record straight on Sky Sports this afternoon.
"The first I heard of this story was probably two or three weeks ago when my brother-in-law sent me a text and said I hear you're working with Mayo. Totally untrue.
"Very disappointing I have to say as well. Not for me but it was very disparaging for the Mayo management.
"To think that they would take somebody in at the eleventh hour and look to start developing some kind of defensive system a week out from the All-Ireland final doesn't make sense.
"The national broadcaster carried the story, national newspapers carried the story and so people will believe when they see it in the paper, they'll believe it.
"It's poor journalism to be honest with you, for me I can't understand how somebody can't pick up the phone and say 'It is true or not true?' and validate the story."
