Ulster SHC Shield final: Donegal make history

June 26, 2016

Ardal McDermott

Donegal 5-13
Monaghan 2-14

Donegal recovered from a shaky start to win the first ever Ulster SHC Shield at Monaghan's expense in Brewster Park this afternoon.

With Conor Boyle among the goal-scorers, Monaghan stormed into 2-4 to 0-1 lead inside 13 minutes. But a goal directly from a long-range Jack O'Loughlin free brought Ardal McDermott's charges back into it. Further majors by Paddy Hannigan and captain Danny Cullen gave the winners a 3-4 to 2-4 interval lead.

The momentum remained with the Tir Chonnaill men after the restart with sub Kevin Campbell adding a fourth goal. Seven points from free-taker Lee Henderson extended their advantage before Ronan McDermott's late goal wrapped up the win, which earns Donegal entry to the Ulster SHC proper next year.
