Donegal's latest addition to their management team, Jack Cooney is looking forward to starting to work with the players.

The former Westmeath selector is a surprise inclusion on the management team as he lives in his native county, while he works in Dublin.

However, he revealed to the Donegal Democrat that he has a lot of connections with the Ulster county as he prepares to work with new manager Rory Gallagher.

Cooney's wife Elaine is a Donegal native and he revealed that they spent a lot of time in the Tir Chonaill county.

"We are up in Donegal fairly often and spend a lot of the summer in Donegal, once the children get their school holidays. I always take in a couple of matches anytime I'm up there and over the years I have seen a fair few club games. I know the club scene fairly well.

"I'm working with Martin McHugh at Sligo IT," said Cooney. "Martin contacted me in November and I wasn't committed to anyone at the time. I also know Rory Gallagher for a few years and after a few calls and chats with Rory, I decided to get on board with Donegal.

"I met the squad and I'm looking forward now to getting back down and getting stuck in. My role is going to be both trainer/coach and mentor."
