Neil McGee says he is happy to take a break from intense county training which he has experienced with Donegal over the past four seasons.

The 2014 'Footballer of the Year' nominee is currently preparing for his third International Rules series as Ireland take on Australia this Saturday in Perth and says it's nice to slow down from the hectic pace of inter-county football.

"It's nice, you know, getting away from the pure intensity of county training. The sheer intensity of county training, you have to preparing yourself for it from first thing in the morning," McGee told the Irish Examiner.

"We went out for a wee kickabout and a runabout, it's enjoyable. Obviously we will pick the intensity up. But every time you go to county training, you nearly have to be focused from when you get out of bed in the morning, especially the way we have trained during the past four years and no doubt that is the way we will continue to train."

AFL players receive a nine-week break ahead of their pre-season but between club and country, McGee will get little time to relax before returning to the Donegal setup for the 2015, as his next stop will be the All Star tour in Boston.

"I keep the weights going all year," he said. "I just do a wee bit. You put on weight over Christmas. That is only natural."
