Michael Murphy has paid tribute to Jim McGuinness, saying that the former Donegal boss owes him and his team mates nothing.

Murphy, who was named Ireland captain in Paul Earley's 25-man International Rules panel yesterday, worked under McGuinness for four glorious years for the Tir Chonaill County, which included an All-Ireland triumph in 2012, and admitted that his departure was a tough blow to take.

"I suppose it was a tough couple of weeks," Murphy said. "You would have met him once or twice and he was still mulling things over in his head. He was trying to come up with things. I suppose the defeat made things that bit more difficult.

"The first reaction whenever you get a defeat in such a big game is that you wanted to get bulled straight back into it. You want to get back on the horse again. But after weighing everything up, between family and his commitments, he decided that was the best decision.

"He owes us absolutely nothing. He has given us absolutely everything. We had fantastic times."
