Murphy: three in a row would have been nice

Michael Murphy admits Donegal are still smarting from last year's Ulster final defeat to Monaghan.

The Tir Chonail men were stunned by Malachy O'Rourke's side in last year's provincial final and they have an opportunity to set the record straight in this weekend's 2014 decider:

"People like to say that you do get over them but you never do - but the main thing is to learn," the Glenswilly clubman tells The Irish Daily Mirror. "A lot of beaten finalists get turned over either in the next Qualifier round or in the quarter-finals, it's a very quick turnaround."

"But when you are preparing for a final like we are now you are not even thinking of the Qualifiers. That's the mentality you have to have.

"But last year when you're hit with that defeat it's very, very difficult. You're meeting teams who have momentum and you're still trying to get over the defeat.

"It caught up with us in the end. We overcame Laois and were still only learning from our defeat when we got turned over by Mayo.

"Three in a row would have been nice - but I guarantee you that going into that final it wasn't mentioned.

"You live in the moment - it was another game, an Ulster final, a chance to perform and that is how you're thinking. It's only when it's over and then you look back at the three-in-a-row, and the All-Ireland.

"But at the time you are just engrained in the present and trying to win. It wasn't won - get over it, get on with it."
