Niall Harley, who will captain Donegal in Sunday's Ulster MFC final against Armagh in Clones, spent the first 12 years of his life in South Africa.
The sports all-rounder, who is also a talented hurler and rugby player, grew up in Cape Town before moving to Donegal where his father Kevin hails from.
"I grew up in Cape Town, but we decided to come home as there were quite a lot of burglaries in the area and our own house was burgled," Harley explained to the Irish News.
"We just thought after that it was a wee bit too dangerous to stay on there so we came home. It was a lovely climate over there with 35 degrees in the summer and it was great weather."
