Letterkenny Gaels got their season off to a winning start with a narrow victory over Robert Emmetts in Castlefinn on Saturday evening last. The visitors started strongly with the opening score from a Conor Mc Brearty free before Darren Mc Bride responded for the home side. Gaels added further scores from full forward James McGlynn and another brace from Mc Brearty. The home side playing a blanket defence were difficult to penetrate as The Gaels wide's tally was adding up. A penetrating run from the powerful Ciaran Cannon resulted in a goal after a good build up on 25 minutes to put the visitors in a commanding position. The home side reduced the deficit with a free from Darren McBride and a Brian Dooher point on the stroke of half time. Half Time 1.5 to 0.3
The home side regrouped for the second half and although Gaels extended their lead with a McBrearty free Emmets began to take control. Darren McBride added further points to reduce the margin. On 51minutes a Simon McMenamin goal levelled matters and the game was going very much in favour of the home side as they took the lead in the closing minutes. However an excellent move orchestrated by corner forward Patrick Doherty resulted in a penalty award for the Gaels and McBrearty coolly slotted home to send the Letterkenny boys home with the points. For Emmetts Dean McBrearty , Chris Bryson, Brian Dooher and Marcus Curran were excellent, while Shane Graham, Aaron Stewart, Brendan O Brien, Cannon and McBrearty stood out for the visitors.
