Ladies boss looks to championship

April 04, 2014
New Donegal ladies football manager Davy McLaughlin believes the year could yet have a silver lining for his side.

The North-Westerners have already been relegated to Division 2 of the National League after a run of six straight defeats, but McLaughlin - who has taken over the reins from Margaret Foy - insists the season isn't a "write off" and will be looking for a strong finish to the league campaign against Kerry at IT Tralee on Sunday.

"I was very encouraged with the performance against Monaghan (in the last round) and being honest if the game had gone on any longer I believe we would have gone on and won. We finished very strong and had them on the back foot in the closing stages and they were panicking in the closing minutes," he told the Donegal Democrat.

"The performance was very encouraging and I watched them against Cork, too, and they were in that game for a long time too and were more than a match for the Cork girls. Those performances have convinced me that we are not too far away and on our day we are more than a match for any of the top teams.

"It is a matter of restoring confidence now and while the league is written off we are not writing off the rest of 2014.

"We have the winners of Tyrone or Armagh in the championship at the end of June and we have already turned our thoughts to that game. And we are using this weekend's trip to Kerry as the start of that preparation."
