Late late goal secures the league points in Carn

A last minute goal, forced over the line by Gráinne Sweeney propelled our Minor girls to victory from the jaws of defeat in a titanic clash with Carndonagh on Sunday morning. 

 

It was an early start for John Mc Conigley and the team as they set off for Inishowen for an 11am throw in. Carndonagh had the advantage of the wind in the opening period, but it didn’t play a significant role in either half. 

 

The Gaels began reasonably brightly, but missed a couple of scoring opportunities. The hosts made the girls pay with a goal in the first five minutes to give them the best possible start. Gaeil Fhánada did work their way into the game from there, Clare Friel and Lauren Carr from play, before a second Carr point from a free levelled matters in the twelfth minute. The next bombshell from Carndonagh arrived straightaway - they made their way through the central channel before a pin point ball found their full forward who buried to the net. Michelle Mc Devitt was able to find a score in response for the Gaels midway through the first half with a point from play, but the Carn girls were in the ascendancy for most of the remainder of the opening period. They hit a goal and three points from play to stretch the lead to eight. The Fanad girls were struggling to get past the Carndonagh sweeper, while the lack of support play from the girls wasn’t quite where it normally is. Two very welcome scores did arrive before the break, courtesy of a Lauren Carr pointed free and a trademark Clare Friel goal to change the halftime team talk. Carndonagh 3:03 Gaeil Fhánada 1:05. 

 

The early exchanges of the second half weren’t fruitful on the scoreboard for either team but the Gaels girls were battling harder for the ball which was a positive sign. Both teams did squander a couple of chances before Fanad came good in the seventh minute. Lauren Carr fired over after a driving run, before Clare Friel buried the ball to the net in the next attack, and suddenly the sides were level. The level of support play really improved during the second period, which allowed the Gaels to attack with much more conviction. Kate Sweeney worked herself into the ground in the second half, while Maria Doherty and Eibhlín Shiels also saw far more of the ball. Carndonagh edged ahead again, but Lauren Carr responded with a free to level the scores for the third time. The hosts hit their purple patch in the middle period of the second half, firing over two points and then a goal to give them a commanding five point lead by the twentieth minute. The Gaels weren’t finished yet though, and an inspirational score from Caitlin Heraghty, who literally ran the whole length of the field before firing over the bar. Fanad then had a series of chances, but the ball drifted wide on a few occasions. Iseult Ní Mhathúna, who had a massive second half then drove through and found the top corner of the net to reduce the arrears to a point. Carndonagh pounced again to make it a two point game. Fanad came one last time, with Caitlin Heraghty powering out of defences day getting the ball to Iseult. Iseult glided through the centre and with goal on her mind she unleashed a drive which rattled back off the crossbar. From there a scramble for the ball ensued with Jessica Coll, Gráinne Sweeney and Iseult all fighting for the ball. After what seemed like an eternity, the ball was scrambled to the net with Gráinne Sweeney providing the final touch. 

 

The second half performance was very encouraging. Muireann Ní Mhathúna did very well with her kick outs, while Aoife Gibbons in particular showed very well. Méabh, Tori and Caitlin were very solid in the full back line, while Maria and Keri ran up and down the wings to start attacks. Michelle Mc Devitt did very well on the Carndonagh kickout, while Lauren and Iseult provided a great platform in the middle of the field. The forward line really stood out for its work rate after half time, Marie Kerr and Emma Friel battled for every ball while, Kate, Aoife and Eibhlín were exceptional. Clare provided the focal point of the attack, and when reintroduced,  both Jessica and Gráinne were instrumental in the winning score. 

 

Carndonagh also played very well, and although will be disappointed with the final score will take plenty positives from the game. A great advertisement for girls football yet again, well done girls!

U6, 8, 10s Parish League

 

The parish league tables were finalised today after 4 weeks of high quality football. Blocks were the order of the day in the U10 games with Donegal managing to hold on to top spot on the table after three excellent games. 

 

The semi final will take place between Cork and Kerry, while Donegal are straight into the final.

 

In the U6/U8 league, Galway scraped through to the final and they await the winners of Kerry and Mayo in the semi-final. 

 

Next Sunday will bring an end to a very entertaining parish league and with all teams still in with a chance, we hope to see a big crowd there supporting the stars of the future at 11am Portsalon.

 

U16 County Champions

A rip roaring final ten minutes from the girls in blue and white, where they scored two goals and four points without reply was enough to see off a plucky Dungloe challenge to secure the u16 county title at the Bridge in Dunfanaghy on Sunday afternoon.

 

The girls, managed by Miriam Murphy and Aisling Howe secured their passage to the final with victory over Moville a few weeks ago, but would’ve been weary of Dungloe who defeated them in Portsalon earlier in the campaign. The management were without the services of both Dearbhla Mc Devitt and Méabh Mc Ateer for the game, both having picked up injuries in recent times. 

 

Fanad were the quickest out of the blocks, and managed to find the net within the first couple of minutes. Jessica Coll as she often does, found a pocket of space in a crowded area and unleashed a shot which found the top corner to give the girls a perfect start. Kate Sweeney who got on a lot of ball in the opening exchanges opened her tally for the afternoon a minute later. Dungloe fired over their first score in the fifth minute but Gaeil Fhánada were dominant in all sectors of the field during the first quarter. Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Aoife Gibbons were on top around the middle, and fed plenty ball into the forward line. The Gaels were well thwarted by the Dungloe rearguard quite a few times, but Rachael Friel did well to fire over the bar with her left peg. There followed a prolonged period without a score before the girls from the west fired over their second of the game. Gaeil Fhánada responded immediately, Ciara Mc Elwaine surging forward from wing back to split the posts. Both sides had goal chances before the break, but neither team added to their tally. Gaeil Fhánada 1:03 Dungloe 0:02.

 

The opening stages of the second period were also cagey, with two evenly matched teams working tirelessly, and cancelling each other out. Tori Gallagher had a big game at full back, while Méabh Duffy and Marie Kerr were both influential carrying ball out of defence. Leah Mc Loughlin, situated at full forward was on target in the third minute with a routine free, while she fired over another from play a minute later to stretch the lead to six. Dungloe had the next couple of attacks, and fired over in the sixth minute to reduce the gap to five once more. Caitlin Heraghty and Aideen Friel became more and more prominent as the game progressed, covering their full back line and providing support in the middle third. Kate Sweeney struck for the Gaels in the the twelfth minute, but that really awoke Dungloe. They attacked straight down the centre and were rewarded when a bullet of a shot hit the back of the net. It was a potential game changer and really spurred Dungloe on. To be fair to the girls, they battled for every ball, and Muireann Ní Mhathúna did very well under a high ball to avert another goal. The girls missed a series of chances before Ciara Mc Elwaine showed real leadership to come through and fire over the bar to steady the ship with ten minutes remaining. That spurred the girls on, with Gráinne Sweeney, Kate Sweeney and Emma Friel doing well to open an opportunity

for Leah to pop over the bar. Gaeil Fhánada pushed on from that point, with Kate Sweeney leading the way at centre forward. She registered the next two points from play before rifling home a goal. Natalie Mc Fadden and Alannah Friel entered the action in the closing stages, but it was Rachael Friel who had the final say, firing to the net for the Gaels third goal approaching the final whistle. 

 

The score line at the end definitely flattered the Gaels as this was a very real contest until the final seven or eight minutes. The girls all played their part, but Tori Gallagher, Méabh Duffy, Ciara Mc Elwaine and Kate Sweeney were all very effective on the day and provided leadership when it was required. It rounds of a good season for the girls, many of whom added the u16 crown to the u14 one they picked up back in May.
