U16 County Champions Gaeil Fhánada 3:10 Dungloe 1:03 A rip roaring final ten minutes from the girls in blue and white, where they scored two goals and four points without reply was enough to see off a plucky Dungloe challenge to secure the u16 county title at the Bridge in Dunfanaghy on Sunday afternoon. The girls, managed by Miriam Murphy and Aisling Howe secured their passage to the final with victory over Moville a few weeks ago, but would’ve been weary of Dungloe who defeated them in Portsalon earlier in the campaign. The management were without the services of both Dearbhla Mc Devitt and Méabh Mc Ateer for the game, both having picked up injuries in recent times. Fanad were the quickest out of the blocks, and managed to find the net within the first couple of minutes. Jessica Coll as she often does, found a pocket of space in a crowded area and unleashed a shot which found the top corner to give the girls a perfect start. Kate Sweeney who got on a lot of ball in the opening exchanges opened her tally for the afternoon a minute later. Dungloe fired over their first score in the fifth minute but Gaeil Fhánada were dominant in all sectors of the field during the first quarter. Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Aoife Gibbons were on top around the middle, and fed plenty ball into the forward line. The Gaels were well thwarted by the Dungloe rearguard quite a few times, but Rachael Friel did well to fire over the bar with her left peg. There followed a prolonged period without a score before the girls from the west fired over their second of the game. Gaeil Fhánada responded immediately, Ciara Mc Elwaine surging forward from wing back to split the posts. Both sides had goal chances before the break, but neither team added to their tally. Gaeil Fhánada 1:03 Dungloe 0:02. The opening stages of the second period were also cagey, with two evenly matched teams working tirelessly, and cancelling each other out. Tori Gallagher had a big game at full back, while Méabh Duffy and Marie Kerr were both influential carrying ball out of defence. Leah Mc Loughlin, situated at full forward was on target in the third minute with a routine free, while she fired over another from play a minute later to stretch the lead to six. Dungloe had the next couple of attacks, and fired over in the sixth minute to reduce the gap to five once more. Caitlin Heraghty and Aideen Friel became more and more prominent as the game progressed, covering their full back line and providing support in the middle third. Kate Sweeney struck for the Gaels in the the twelfth minute, but that really awoke Dungloe. They attacked straight down the centre and were rewarded when a bullet of a shot hit the back of the net. It was a potential game changer and really spurred Dungloe on. To be fair to the girls, they battled for every ball, and Muireann Ní Mhathúna did very well under a high ball to avert another goal. The girls missed a series of chances before Ciara Mc Elwaine showed real leadership to come through and fire over the bar to steady the ship with ten minutes remaining. That spurred the girls on, with Gráinne Sweeney, Kate Sweeney and Emma Friel doing well to open an opportunity for Leah to pop over the bar. Gaeil Fhánada pushed on from that point, with Kate Sweeney leading the way at centre forward. She registered the next two points from play before rifling home a goal. Natalie Mc Fadden and Alannah Friel entered the action in the closing stages, but it was Rachael Friel who had the final say, firing to the net for the Gaels third goal approaching the final whistle. The score line at the end definitely flattered the Gaels as this was a very real contest until the final seven or eight minutes. The girls all played their part, but Tori Gallagher, Méabh Duffy, Ciara Mc Elwaine and Kate Sweeney were all very effective on the day and provided leadership when it was required. It rounds of a good season for the girls, many of whom added the u16 crown to the u14 one they picked up back in May. Massive thanks to Miriam and Aisling for their work since June and to the girls and their parents their commitment as well. ‘Mol an óige, agus tiocfaidh sí’ Muireann Ní Mhathúna Marie Kerr Tori Gallagher Méabh Duffy Ciara Mc Elwaine (0:02) Aideen Friel Caitlin Heraghty Iseult Ní Mhathúna Aoife Gibbons Rachel Friel (1:00) Kate Sweeney (1:04) Emma Friel Gráinne Sweeney Leah Mc Loughlin (0:03) Jessica Coll (1:00) Subs used: Natalie Mc Fadden and Alannah Friel. Aodh Ruadh victorious in Reserve Quarter Final Aodh Ruadh 2:18 Gaeil Fhánada 1:09 A strong performance from the men from the south of the county was too much for Bernard Mc Gettigan’s troops earlier at the Cross as they booked their place in the Intermediate B semi-final. The Gaels began exceptionally well, registering the first four scores of the game. Alan Mc Ateer was first on the board, finding his range from just inside the D. James Kerr followed up with the next pair of scores, both from placed balls. Jonny Friel also popped one over in the tenth minute from play. Aodh Ruadh had registered one wide by that time, and another dangerous situation was spoiled by a great interception from senior team bainisteoir Aidan Mc Ateer who lined out at wing back. Aodh Ruadh registered their first score in the eleventh minute, Dermot Slevin finding the target. Michael Ward followed that up to reduce the gap to two a minute later. The Gaels surged forward again, with Cathal Martin feeding a great ball inside to Alan Mc Ateer. Alan in turn played the ball into Jonny Friel’s path and he finished emphatically to the net after 14 minutes. Aodh Ruadh were probably fortunate not to see a black card brandished to their wing back prior to the goal being scored. The men from the south really upped their performance after that, with Ward inside playing a pivotal role. Two Aodh Ruadh points followed before their first goal chance. Shaun Friel made a great save, and Michael Sweeney did even better to ensure the second effort didn’t cross the line. Nevertheless, the men in green and while kept pushing and converted five points in five minutes to move two ahead by the twenty fifth minute. To be fair to Bernard’s men, they steadied the ship well and had two frees to narrow the gap but unfortunately both went the wrong side of the post. Deep in stoppage time, the Ballyshannon men hit a goal and a point to move into a six point lead at the break. Aodh Rua 1:10 Gaeil Fhánada 1:04. The lads regrouped at the break, and started the second period well, registering the first two scores to reduce the gap to four, Brandon Mc Clafferty from play and a James Kerr free. After five minutes however, the Aodh Ruadh men stepped it up again and fired over three points without reply. Oisín Mc Fadden made a big drive through the centre but a double save from the keeper and the corner back denied him. The Ernesiders punished again, firstly with a point and then finding the net for the second time to finish the game as a contest. Jonny Friel was shown a black card for a check which reduced the firepower inside for the remainder of the game. The Gaels continued to battle however, Oisín Mc Fadden in particular leading the charge. Another Alan Mc Ateer effort from play and a Brandon Mc Clafferty tap over free kept the scoreboard ticking over. Aodh Ruadh were also fluid in attack, scoring the next three points before Seamie Coshia fired over a free for the Gaels. The final point came from Aodh Ruadh to confirm their victory. Aodh Ruadh delivered a far more consistent performance, and apart from the first ten minutes were on top for most of the contest. Gaeil Fhánada probably didn’t deserve to be defeated by 12 on the day, but Aodh Ruadh were clinical with their goal chances and hit a couple of purple patches to punish the Gaels. Oisín Mc Fadden never stopped trying to push the Gaels forward, while Michael Sweeney and Bernard Martin in the full back line also battled well. Alan Mc Ateer showed well throughout and it’s great to see him get another hour under his belt. The lads will have a division 3 league decider against Red Hughs to look forward to later in the year, so there’s still the opportunity to lift some silverware in 2019. Team and subs used: Shaun Friel, Michael Sweeney, Bernard Martin, Aiden Heraghty, Aidan Mc Ateer, Cathal Martin, Oisín Mc Fadden, Brandon Mc Clafferty (0:02), James Kerr (0:03), Seamie ‘Coshia’ Friel (0:01), Ciarán Coyle, Alan Mc Ateer (0:02), Jonny Friel (1:01), Joe Blaney, Eoghan Mc Grenaghan, Declan Coyle, James Martin, Conor Mc Conigley. Minor girls The minor girls will train on Wednesday evening at 6pm in Portsalon. U13 Girls Well done to our u13 girls team who defeated St. Eunan’s on Saturday. Next up for the girls is Gaoth Dobhair in Portsalon. Well done girls, and keep up the good work! U10 Girls A great game this evening for the U10 girls in Portsalon. Despite the difficult weather conditions both sides battled bravely & lots of super goals were scored, some points too. MacCumhaills fought hard & there were lots of super skills on display from both teams. A very entertaining game. Well done to all involved. Fanad team this evening: Aoibhinn Callaghan, Aishling Duffy, Cliodhna Robinson, Grace Begley, Meabh Sweeney, Clodagh Mcateer, Orlaith Mc Grenaghan, Sinead Duffy, Sarah Peoples, Erin Carlin. Parish League A highly competitive Round 3 of the Parish league took place in the sunshine on Sunday morning last. The standard is improving with every passing week with some brilliant passages of play and scoring on show. In the under 10 league, Donegal had two wins which puts them in the driving seat going into the final weeks. They sit on 9 points, with Kerry on 5 and Cork on 4. Each of the three games were won by a single score so it’s anyone's guess who will finish top at the end. The u6/u8 league was also very competitive with each team again winning one and losing one. It's almost like it's fixed.... but it’s not! Galway are still marginally out in front on 7 points, Mayo on 6 and Kerry on 5. All to play for next Sunday morning, hope to see everyone there on what will be the second last weekend of the Parish League. U10 Girls The U10 girls have a game this Saturday 28th at 11am v Mc Cumhaills in Portsalon. Parish League Hopefully the sun will shine this Sunday as our U10s and U8&U6s Parish league continue. It was unfortunately cancelled last week due ro the adverse weather conditions. There is very little between each team as evidenced by only the smallest of margins between them in the results to date. Players are asked to arrive in Portsalon at 10.45. Come along and cheer our stars of the future. U9 Boys Our U9s certainly enjoyed their games in sunny Downings on Saturday last. We fielded two teams who put on some great displays of football. The coaching team are delighted with the progress this group is making and attribute the improvement in their skills and their games to the large numbers that are attending the coaching on a regular basis. A big thank you to Downings for organising the event. U13 boys defeated in Ballybofey No luck for our U13 boys as they went down to a strong McCumhaills side this evening played in wet and cold conditions. In the end, the absence of six key players for various reasons along with injuries sustained to Cormac Sweeney and Caolan McElwaine during the game meant the gallant Gaels side were stretched very thin by the time Tony Gallagher blew for full time. Credit to McCumhaills who played a slick brand of football and were very strong in the tackle. For Fanad, Cormac Shovelin, Jamie McAteer, Shane Carr, Ciaran 'Baker' McElwaine and Daibhid Lynch battled hard while Adam Ward hit a lovely goal. A playoff awaits this weekend to see who progresses to the county quarter final stage. More details to follow as we get them. Congratulations ‘Coshia’ On the back of a massive result for our senior team in Burt, we have further good news this evening in that we have an All Ireland medal on its way back to the parish. We’d like to send our congratulations to Seamie Friel and the Donegal Masters team who were victorious in the All Ireland Final in Roscommon this evening. Seamie has been a phenomenal servant to Gaeil Fhánada over the years, and will be central to Bernard Mc Gettigan’s plan as he prepares for a championship quarter final next weekend. Seamie has featured in the county’s green and gold in the past and has enjoyed a great run with the Donegal Masters team this year. They put in a superb second half performance today to defeat Dublin by two points on a score line of 0:09 to 0:07. Comhghairdeas leat ó gach duine sa chlub! Enjoy the celebrations!!! Gaeil Fhánada Le Chéile - Cash Draw Winners! A big well done to both Catherine McAteer and Joe Logue who were the lucky winners of €500 each in our final cash draw for Gaeil Fhánada Le Chéile. Massive finish secure Intermediate status in Burt Gaeil Fhánada 2:11 Beart 1:08 The introduction of Conor Mc Gonigle and Darren Mc Elwaine in the closing stages proved crucial for Gaeil Fhánada as they powered Aidan Mc Ateer’s team over the line to gain two valuable championship points to secure Intermediate status for 2020. The Burt men had the advantage of the wind during the first period and moved into an early lead, scoring a point from play in the fourth minute. Neither side was prepared to open up properly in what was a cagey start. A Burt goal shook the Gaels rearguard a few minutes later. A high speculative ball was hit in towards the sqaure, and Burt corner forward Ciarán Bradley sneaked in around the back for the easiest tap into the net. The lads were probably unlucky to go four down as they had started reasonably brightly. Oisín Shiels led the Gaels fight back with a confident score of his right foot. The lads upped their game and the full back line of Frank Sweeney, Paddy Heraghty and Fergal Friel were playing well, Heraghty making a great block to prevent a certain Burt score. Burt did stretch their lead to four points again on 13 minutes before Gaeil Fhánada responded with a big score. Shaun Kerr found a pocket of space in behind and confidently strode forward unleashed a pin point shot into the corner of the net. A few minutes later, Bernard Mc Gettigan who played with loads of width all day squared up the game in the twentieth minute. Fanad pushed on with Jimmy Coyle and Fergus Friel driving forward linking with the men inside. Shaun Kerr pushed Gaeil Fhánada ahead after a fine move involving Friel, Coyle and Michael Sweeney. Burt responded with an Oisín Kelly point, although there was controversy over whether it actually went over the bar. Undeterred, the lads went again, with Eoghan Carr on target from a placed ball and Brian Mc Veigh also split the posts to push the Gaels two ahead approaching the break. Burt had the final say of the opening half, converting a free to leave a point in it at the break. Gaeil Fhánada 1:05 Beart 1:04 Aidan introduced Mark Friel and James Gallagher at the break as the Fanad men tried to build on the decent first half. Burt however came strongest and equalised the game in the second minute. The hosts pushed themselves into the lead in the eighth minute after a stop start few minutes. They were completely on top at this stage but hit several bad wides to keep the Gaels in touch. Two quick fire points did stretch the Burt lead to three in the twentieth minute. A big turning point arrived in the next play, when they had an opportunity to stretch it to four, but a combination of Eoin Mc Gonigle and the woodwork pushed the ball wide, and Fergal Friel powered out of the corner with the ball beating three Burt men as he went. It really seemed to lift the team, and within a minute Brian Mc Veigh pointed for the Gaels. Mc Gonigle was reintroduced, as was Darren Mc Elwaine. The lads got joy of the next Burt kickout and Oisín Shiels came steaming through. His goal bound effort skimmed the top of the crossbar and over to reduce the gap to one. Darren Mc Elwaine started winning loose ball and Michael Sweeney became a bigger threat. Shiels boomed another one over from a difficult angle to tie the to tie the game before an almost carbon copy effort from Shaun Kerr edged Fanad ahead with a minute left. The scores kept coming from the Gaels, Conor Mc Gonigle getting on the end of a pass inside and sensibly fisting over the bar. As the game entered injury time, Mc Elwaine did brilliantly down the left side of the attack and popped a dangerous ball across the sqaure to the onrushing Mc Gonigle who palmed to the net. Eoghan Carr rounded off the scoring with the point from a free a minute later to secure the Gaels win, and importantly to ensure the weren’t dragged into the relegation play off. The lads stood tall yesterday evening, led by Fergal Friel, Jimmy Coyle and Fergus Friel at the back. Oisín Shiels made some massive plays, while Shaun Kerr was also bright throughout. It was the double switch of Mc Elwaine and Mc Gonigle however, that gave the lads the impetus in the final minutes to drive the team to victory! Well done to the team and management. It seems that the result won’t be enough to secure a passage to the quarter finals, but we’ll keep an eye on the games in Group B today to see if the very unlikely scenario works out for us. Either way, well done lads on an important result! Eoin Mc Gonigle Fergal Friel Paddy Heraghty Frank Sweeney Conor Mc Gonigle (1:01) Jimmy Coyle Fergus Friel Oisín Shiels (0:03) Michael Sweeney Bernard Mc Gettigan (0:01) Brian Mc Veigh (0:02) Shaun Kerr (1:02) Matthew Gallagher Niall Carr Eoghan Carr (0:02) James Gallagher for Frank Sweeney Mark Friel for Conor Mc Gonigle Seamus Coyle for Fergal Friel (b/s) Conor Mc Gonigle for Niall Carr Darren Mc Elwaine for Matthew Gallagher Reserve Quarter Final Intermediate B Championship Q/F Gaeil Fhánada v Aodh Ruadh Saturday, September 28th @ 12:30pm Páirc Aodh Rua, Red Hughs It’s a big weekend for Bernard Mc Gettigan and the reserve outfit as they face into their championship quarter final against Aodh Ruadh. The lads also faced the men from Ballyshannon at this stage of the competition last year, when the men from the south of the county came out on top. Best of luck to Bernard and the lads, we’d appreciate a good support on Saturday.
