U16 County Champions Gaeil Fhánada 3:10 Dungloe 1:03 A rip roaring final ten minutes from the girls in blue and white, where they scored two goals and four points without reply was enough to see off a plucky Dungloe challenge to secure the u16 county title at the Bridge in Dunfanaghy on Sunday afternoon. The girls, managed by Miriam Murphy and Aisling Howe secured their passage to the final with victory over Moville a few weeks ago, but would’ve been weary of Dungloe who defeated them in Portsalon earlier in the campaign. The management were without the services of both Dearbhla Mc Devitt and Méabh Mc Ateer for the game, both having picked up injuries in recent times. Fanad were the quickest out of the blocks, and managed to find the net within the first couple of minutes. Jessica Coll as she often does, found a pocket of space in a crowded area and unleashed a shot which found the top corner to give the girls a perfect start. Kate Sweeney who got on a lot of ball in the opening exchanges opened her tally for the afternoon a minute later. Dungloe fired over their first score in the fifth minute but Gaeil Fhánada were dominant in all sectors of the field during the first quarter. Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Aoife Gibbons were on top around the middle, and fed plenty ball into the forward line. The Gaels were well thwarted by the Dungloe rearguard quite a few times, but Rachael Friel did well to fire over the bar with her left peg. There followed a prolonged period without a score before the girls from the west fired over their second of the game. Gaeil Fhánada responded immediately, Ciara Mc Elwaine surging forward from wing back to split the posts. Both sides had goal chances before the break, but neither team added to their tally. Gaeil Fhánada 1:03 Dungloe 0:02. The opening stages of the second period were also cagey, with two evenly matched teams working tirelessly, and cancelling each other out. Tori Gallagher had a big game at full back, while Méabh Duffy and Marie Kerr were both influential carrying ball out of defence. Leah Mc Loughlin, situated at full forward was on target in the third minute with a routine free, while she fired over another from play a minute later to stretch the lead to six. Dungloe had the next couple of attacks, and fired over in the sixth minute to reduce the gap to five once more. Caitlin Heraghty and Aideen Friel became more and more prominent as the game progressed, covering their full back line and providing support in the middle third. Kate Sweeney struck for the Gaels in the the twelfth minute, but that really awoke Dungloe. They attacked straight down the centre and were rewarded when a bullet of a shot hit the back of the net. It was a potential game changer and really spurred Dungloe on. To be fair to the girls, they battled for every ball, and Muireann Ní Mhathúna did very well under a high ball to avert another goal. The girls missed a series of chances before Ciara Mc Elwaine showed real leadership to come through and fire over the bar to steady the ship with ten minutes remaining. That spurred the girls on, with Gráinne Sweeney, Kate Sweeney and Emma Friel doing well to open an opportunity for Leah to pop over the bar. Gaeil Fhánada pushed on from that point, with Kate Sweeney leading the way at centre forward. She registered the next two points from play before rifling home a goal. Natalie Mc Fadden and Alannah Friel entered the action in the closing stages, but it was Rachael Friel who had the final say, firing to the net for the Gaels third goal approaching the final whistle. The score line at the end definitely flattered the Gaels as this was a very real contest until the final seven or eight minutes. The girls all played their part, but Tori Gallagher, Méabh Duffy, Ciara Mc Elwaine and Kate Sweeney were all very effective on the day and provided leadership when it was required. It rounds of a good season for the girls, many of whom added the u16 crown to the u14 one they picked up back in May. Massive thanks to Miriam and Aisling for their work since June and to the girls and their parents their commitment as well. ‘Mol an óige, agus tiocfaidh sí’ Muireann Ní Mhathúna Marie Kerr Tori Gallagher Méabh Duffy Ciara Mc Elwaine (0:02) Aideen Friel Caitlin Heraghty Iseult Ní Mhathúna Aoife Gibbons Rachel Friel (1:00) Kate Sweeney (1:04) Emma Friel Gráinne Sweeney Leah Mc Loughlin (0:03) Jessica Coll (1:00) Subs used: Natalie Mc Fadden and Alannah Friel. Aodh Ruadh victorious in Reserve Quarter Final Aodh Ruadh 2:18 Gaeil Fhánada 1:09 A strong performance from the men from the south of the county was too much for Bernard Mc Gettigan’s troops earlier at the Cross as they booked their place in the Intermediate B semi-final. The Gaels began exceptionally well, registering the first four scores of the game. Alan Mc Ateer was first on the board, finding his range from just inside the D. James Kerr followed up with the next pair of scores, both from placed balls. Jonny Friel also popped one over in the tenth minute from play. Aodh Ruadh had registered one wide by that time, and another dangerous situation was spoiled by a great interception from senior team bainisteoir Aidan Mc Ateer who lined out at wing back. Aodh Ruadh registered their first score in the eleventh minute, Dermot Slevin finding the target. Michael Ward followed that up to reduce the gap to two a minute later. The Gaels surged forward again, with Cathal Martin feeding a great ball inside to Alan Mc Ateer. Alan in turn played the ball into Jonny Friel’s path and he finished emphatically to the net after 14 minutes. Aodh Ruadh were probably fortunate not to see a black card brandished to their wing back prior to the goal being scored. The men from the south really upped their performance after that, with Ward inside playing a pivotal role. Two Aodh Ruadh points followed before their first goal chance. Shaun Friel made a great save, and Michael Sweeney did even better to ensure the second effort didn’t cross the line. Nevertheless, the men in green and while kept pushing and converted five points in five minutes to move two ahead by the twenty fifth minute. To be fair to Bernard’s men, they steadied the ship well and had two frees to narrow the gap but unfortunately both went the wrong side of the post. Deep in stoppage time, the Ballyshannon men hit a goal and a point to move into a six point lead at the break. Aodh Rua 1:10 Gaeil Fhánada 1:04. The lads regrouped at the break, and started the second period well, registering the first two scores to reduce the gap to four, Brandon Mc Clafferty from play and a James Kerr free. After five minutes however, the Aodh Ruadh men stepped it up again and fired over three points without reply. Oisín Mc Fadden made a big drive through the centre but a double save from the keeper and the corner back denied him. The Ernesiders punished again, firstly with a point and then finding the net for the second time to finish the game as a contest. Jonny Friel was shown a black card for a check which reduced the firepower inside for the remainder of the game. The Gaels continued to battle however, Oisín Mc Fadden in particular leading the charge. Another Alan Mc Ateer effort from play and a Brandon Mc Clafferty tap over free kept the scoreboard ticking over. Aodh Ruadh were also fluid in attack, scoring the next three points before Seamie Coshia fired over a free for the Gaels. The final point came from Aodh Ruadh to confirm their victory. Aodh Ruadh delivered a far more consistent performance, and apart from the first ten minutes were on top for most of the contest. Gaeil Fhánada probably didn’t deserve to be defeated by 12 on the day, but Aodh Ruadh were clinical with their goal chances and hit a couple of purple patches to punish the Gaels. Oisín Mc Fadden never stopped trying to push the Gaels forward, while Michael Sweeney and Bernard Martin in the full back line also battled well. Alan Mc Ateer showed well throughout and it’s great to see him get another hour under his belt. The lads will have a division 3 league decider against Red Hughs to look forward to later in the year, so there’s still the opportunity to lift some silverware in 2019. Parish League A highly competitive Round 3 of the Parish league took place in the sunshine on Sunday morning last. The standard is improving with every passing week with some brilliant passages of play and scoring on show. In the under 10 league, Donegal had two wins which puts them in the driving seat going into the final weeks. They sit on 9 points, with Kerry on 5 and Cork on 4. Each of the three games were won by a single score so it’s anyone's guess who will finish top at the end. The u6/u8 league was also very competitive with each team again winning one and losing one. It's almost like it's fixed.... but it’s not! Galway are still marginally out in front on 7 points, Mayo on 6 and Kerry on 5. All to play for next Sunday morning, hope to see everyone there on what will be the second last weekend of the Parish League. On Tuesday, 24 September 2019, 10:35:16 GMT+1, Gareth Crossan
