Donegal star Ryan McHugh admits it will be strange contesting an Ulster SFC final against a county in which his father Martin is still revered.

Ryan was only three when his famous dad masterminded Cavan's last Ulster SFC success in 1997.

“I can’t really remember it, but sure he (Martin) hasn’t shut up about it since!” McHugh joked in the Irish Daily Mirror.

“Seriously though, Cavan will always have a special place in the McHugh household. Some of dad’s closest friends are from Cavan and the people of Cavan will always have huge time for dad, but I think friendships are going to have to be put aside for a while.”

The wing back is enjoying the more expansive brand of football Donegal are playing under Declan Bonner.

“Last year I played more as a half forward, and more as a half back this year," he noted.

“A defender’s number one job is to mark a man and try to take him out of the game as much as possible. You talk about the best half-backs in Ireland, the Lee Keegans, the Jack McCaffreys, the James McCarthys, these sort of players seem to get the balance right.

“When you’re in the heat of championship battle it’s difficult to try and change your game but as a team we’re trying to be more offensive.”
