U8s and u10s boys and girls host Downings on Friday at 6:45pm in Portsalon.
Teams to meet at 6:30pm. U6 training as usual at 6:30pm.

U10 Girls

Fanad under 10 girls played against Milford on Saturday 15th June.
An under strength Fanad side started the game nervously as they were missing some experience players, however after ten minutes into the game the girls proved they were there to put up a challenge, with some fine scoring from Grace Begley and great passes from Erin Logue. Fanad dominated the end of the first half with great passing and team work. Aoibhean Callaghan had a fantastic goal near the end of the first half. Sarah Peoples and Erin Carlin were steadfast defensively and with a great debut from Kara McAteer in goals, kept Milford out in the first half.

In the second half Milford came into the game more, with a couple of fine goals. Kara Friel stood up to the challenge and had a few great saves, with Grace Begley moving back into sweeper. Clodagh McAteer made some great runs narrowly missing a goal. Caoimhe Kerr also narrowly missed some scoring opportunities. The game ended in a draw but was a thrilling and enjoyable game.

The Hibernian Park men were victorious in their visit to Páirc Uí Shiadhail this evening. They were probably just about worth their victory over the course of the hour, but they also seemed to benefit from a few decisions which left Fanad players aggrieved along the way.

The visitors opened well, and were two points to the good after five minutes. The Gaels, playing away from the clubhouse end hit a purple patch and fired over the next four points in what was a whirlwind opening up the game. Brian Mc Veigh slotted over, before three efforts from Seamí Nanny found their way over the black spot. Seamí first fired over from play and added a second from a dead ball. Seamí’s third point was a thing of beauty. A sublime diagonal pass from Paul ‘Dougie’ Coyle found Seamí who turned and fired over the bar in an instant. In the blink of an eye however, Burt were back in the lead. Joe Boyle, Sean Mc Hugh and Georgie Kelly were causing havoc inside when fed with early ball. Both Mc Hugh and Kelly got on the scoresheet again and Burt were soon five points to four ahead. Niall Carr was clipped from behind running through the centre and Seamí duly stepped up and slotted over the bar. The visitors never relented, and again stepped in with their sixth point of the evening, and edged further ahead with a magnificent Joe Boyle free from 45 meters. Seamí replied with a fine free of his own but Boyle with another corker from distance finished the first half scoring and left Burt ahead by nine points to six at the break. Both teams hit some mighty scores during the first half, in what was a high quality display from both teams.

The second period was much more of a cagey affair, and didn’t really catch fire. Joe Boyle was first on the scoresheet with a routine free, to which Seamí Nanny replied with a free of his own. That was as good as it got for ten minutes, where neither team were able to trouble the scoreboard. Michael Sweeney and Conor Mc Gonigle were both penalised in attacking positions when it seemed they were due to be awarded the frees, while both teams also made poor decisions on the ball. Mark Friel reduced the deficit to two points with ten minutes left, but Burt then broke for home with three points on the trot to move 13 points to eight ahead. Eoghan Carr from play and a Seamí Nanny point after a foul on Michael Sweeney gave the Gaels hope in injury time. Fanad had possession in the Burt danger area, but coughed it up and the visitors raced down the field to add an insurance score.

Burt showed this evening why they are the pace setters, playing very effective football in the opening period and using their quality forwards to good effect. They made their way into a winning position and dictated proceedings after the break. Aidan shouldn’t be too disappointed as the Gaels showed flashes of what they can do and remained in the game when under pressure in the second period. On another day, the bounce of the ball could have went our way and we could possible have gotten something from the game. Joe Blaney will be content with his display, while Conor Mc Gonigle fought hard and won loads of dirty ball in the middle third. Plenty to work on for Aidan and his backroom team but some positives to take from it as well.

Gaeil Fhánada's Annual School's Sports Day

On behalf of Gaeil Fhánada CLG, Bridie & Margaretta would like to sincerely thank everyone for another successful sports day. Big well done to the children from all seven schools who were so mannerly, well behaved and who seemed to enjoy their day. Thank you to the teachers for supervising on the day and many thanks also to all the volunteers, without their help the day wouldn't be possible. A very special 'thank-you' to the Swilly-Mulroy Credit Union who sponsored refreshments for the children and who do so every year. This sponsorship is very much appreciated.
