Exciting Developments at Páirc Uí Shiadhail

The club were delighted to announce the exciting news of another upcoming development at Páirc Uí Shiadhail to its members over the weekend.

With the continued backing of the local community, much progress has been made with our facilities at Páirc Uí Shiadhail over the last number of years, where we now boast one of the best playing surfaces in the county.

Over the weekend, the news broke of the commitment of local business man Darren Mc Gee to fund and build a spectator stand at Páirc Uí Shiadhail. The news of the forthcoming work on the stand is a huge boost to our club members who have worked tirelessly over a number of years to further improve the fortunes and the facilities of our club, both on and off the field.

Having a stand at our facility will greatly enhance the experience of viewing our games and is a very positive move for our club. We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to Darren for his generosity and we look forward to getting to work on the project.

Senior Fixtures

The senior team are due to play Naomh Colmcille in the league this coming weekend. Please see our Facebook page for further details on the fixture later in the week.

Downings claim narrow victory in senior fixture

The hosts hit the net through Lorcan Connor in the opening minute, making the most of a defensive mix up. Gary Bán Mc Clafferty added a Downings points before Fergus Friel fired over the Gaels’ first score of the evening after good work from Mark Friel in the build-up. The first half was a poor spectacle for the considerable crowd, with Gaeil Fhánada struggling to break down Downings defensive shape. Both teams were guilty of disappointing wides before Lorcan Connor finally added the next score after 24 minutes to give Downings a four point lead. Jimmy Coyle presented Conor Mc Gonigle an opportunity which he slotted over before an Eric Roberts free stretched the lead again. Gaeil Fhánada finished the half strongly however, and got themselves right back into things with a goal and a point before the break. Oisín Shiels squeezed one over the bar, before Darren Mc Elwaine did brilliantly to fire into the bottom corner of the net in the final minute of the half after Conor Mc Gonigle got the ball across to him. It was all square, one goal and three points apiece when referee, Pat Barrett blew for half time.

The second half standard was much improved on the first, with Seamí Nanny first to register on the scoresheet with a lovely effort from play. The Gaels looked dangerous in the second half, and opened several decent goal chances but didn’t avail of any of them. The hosts levelled again with a Roberts free before a fisted effort from Bernard Mc Gettigan went between the sticks after a greet move stemming from a James Gallagher turnover. Eric Roberts and Padraig Mc Ginty were both accurate for the hosts before Seamí Nanny knocked over a free to level proceedings once again when Fergal Friel was fouled. Both Friel and Michael Sweeney made big contributions after their introductions while Paddy Heraghty pulled off a miraculous block to deny a goal midway through the half. Seamí Nanny fired over another free before Sweeney released Mc Gettigan to fire over off his left to put the Gaels two up. The hosts responded again from Mc Clafferty and Connor to even things up for a fourth time in the second half. Fergal Friel and Oisín Shiels hit two quickfire points to steady the ship for Fanad, but responded with a free before the sucker punch arrived with a minute to play. Shane Boyce found a gap in the Fanad rearguard and finished the ball to the net despite Eoin Mc Gonigle’s best efforts. Eric Roberts kicked another point before the Gaels managed to get going again. Paddy Carr and Paul Coyle were introduced and both saw possession as an equaliser was sought. A few high balls into the square caused bother but a mass home defence just about dealt with them to secure victory.

Gaeil Fhánada 3:11        Downings 2:05

Throw in for this one was 6 o clock, with a stronger breeze prevalent than later in the evening. Gaeil Fhánada attacked the clubhouse end in the first half, which took a while to get going. The Gaels had wasted three opportunities before the hosts kicked the first score in the fifth minute. Gaeil Fhánada responded with their next attack. Good build up play from Seamí Coshia, James Kerr and Joe Blaney sent Patsy Friel through, but his shot was deflected over the bar by Downings goalkeeper Brendan Mc Gee. Gaeil Fhánada moved into the lead in the 10th minute, Seamí Coshia firing over a free he won himself. The hosts were playing well at this juncture, and were rewarded with a goal after thirteen minutes. An effort for a point dropped from the top of the post and the rebound was finished to the net. The teams traded the next two points - Frank Sweeney clipping over the bar for Gaeil Fhánada. The Gaels dominated possession from that point on and moved into the lead before the break. Paddy Carr fired over a free with the help of the top of the crossbar before two fine points in a minute from Coshia put the lads in the driving seat. Oisín Mc Fadden fired over a further point with the final kick of the half to leave Gaeil Fhánada two points up at the break.

The teams traded the first two points of the second half, Oisín Mc Fadden firing over a beauty for Gaeil Fhánada. The next two Gaels scores put the game to bed. Patsy Friel and Thomas Mc Conigley linked up well which opened an easy opportunity for for Patsy to hit the net. Downings fired over a free but the second Gaels’ goal duly arrived. A loose ball spilled away from goal but Patsy crossed it soccer style for Joe Blaney to bury into the net. The Gaels, now in complete control wasted a couple of opportunities before Oisín Mc Fadden struck again twenty minutes into the second period. James Kerr converted a free before Patsy Friel struck for a second goal. Mylie Mc Bride who looked bright after his introduction struck a high ball into the danger area. It eventually fell to Patsy who finished from close range. That was followed by a lovely point from James Kerr to finish off the Fanad scoring. Downings responded with a fisted effort to the net in injury time.

Championship fixture for Senior Ladies

Gaeil Fhánada v Aodh Ruadh, Ballyshannon

The senior ladies will play their first championship match of 2019 this Sunday morning, April 19th, against Aodh Ruadh, Ballyshannon at 11am in Páirc Uí Shiadhail, Portsalon.

The senior ladies had a successful county championship campaign last year, defeating Naomh Muire in September 2018 to take home the Junior ‘A’ Championship. They then took on Scotstown in the Ulster quarter final in Portsalon in early October and although Fanad gave a good account of themselves that day, Scotstown recorded a hard fought one point victory, after extra time.

Gaeil Fhánada now make the step up to play Intermediate football this year and there is no doubt that Aodh Ruadh will pose a tough challenge for the ladies this weekend. We expect a highly competitive encounter on Sunday, so why not make your way to Páirc Uí Shiadhail to cheer on the ladies as they begin their championship campaign. Bígí linn maidin Dé Domhnaigh.

Under 14 boys make it two wins from two

Our under 14 boys played an amalgamation of Lifford/Robert Emmets in Portsalon on Monday night and ran out 14-point winners on a score line of 3-20 to 2-09.

Similar to last week’s game against St Eunans the game was very even in the first half but on a warm evening and in the wide-open space in Portsalon the Gaeil Fhánada subs again proved the difference in the second half.

Robert Emmets started strong and had some powerful runners but as the half wore on Calum McAteer, Ciaran Sweeney and Sean Carr combined brilliantly to halt the runners and build a platform for Gaeil Fhánada. The half time score was 2-3 to 1-5 in Robert Emmets favor.

Charlie McAteer brought his shooting boots scoring 0-7 over the night and the excellent Declan Brougham scored 1-3 from midfield. Aaron McLaughlin rattled off 2-3 in the second half and Ciaran ‘Baker’ Mc Elwaine scored 2 great points on his debut at under 14 level.

The boys next game will be away to St. Michaels next Monday the 20th May.

Team: Brian Gallagher, Sean Carr, Eoghan Logue, Caolan McElwaine, Ciaran Sweeney, Jamie McAteer, Calum McAteer, Declan Brougham, Cormac Sweeney, Charlie McAteer, Cormac Shovlin, Ben Orsi, Shaun McDevitt, Subs: James McAteer, Aaron McLaughlin, Dean Friel, Cian Friel, Ciaran ‘Baker’ McElwaine

U12 Boys

U12 Boys play their first home game of the season at home to Mac Cumhaills this Wednesday the 15th with a 7 pm throw in. We had to reverse 3 of our first 5 games so looking forward to getting the boys out on our home patch for this game.

Div 1 Northern Board.

Gaeil Fhánada 2.10                 St Eunans 3.06

After our victory over Letterkenny Gaels on Bank Holiday Monday, the lads carried on their good form with a brilliant display this evening from this young Fanad team.

Our excellent young goalkeeper, Shane Orsi whose kick-outs gave the team a great platform to start the attacks from. Our defenders Niall Toland, Cormac Dunleavy, Johnny Mc Ateer Caolan Mc Elwaine and Adam Ward who tackled and blocked andever gave the Eunans forwards time on the ball.

We had 2 hardworking midfielders Shane Carr and Kieran "the baker" Mc Elwaine who delivered some great balls to our forwards of Daibhead Lynch who dictated play around the half forward line.

Also Gavin mc Ateer who scored a brilliant goal with 4 minutes left to put us a point up. Mark Hunter and Killian Friel did so much unselfish work off the ball. And our two youngest players Darragh Shiels who kicked a very good point late in the game and to wee Eoghan Dunleavy who came off the bench and set up a few scores. All the lads gave 100% on a damp evening for football.

Team and scorers. Shane Orsi, Niall Toland, Cormac Dunleavy, Johnny Mc Ateer, Caolan Mc Elwaine 0.01,  Adam Ward, Shane Carr 0.01, Kieran baker Mc Elwaine 1.01, Daibhead Lynch, Gavin Mc Ateer 1.05, Killian Friel 0.01, Mark Hunter, Darragh Shiels 0.01, Eoghan Dunleavy. Missing this evening was JP Gallagher who was out sick, and Darragh mc Elwaine who was away to watch his other favourite sport WWE (wrestling)

U6’s, U8’s, & U10’s

Pairc Uí Shiadhail was a hive of activity last Friday evening (10th May) when Naomh Pádraig Lifford brought three teams with them and played our U8s and our U10s boys and girls. The three games ran at the same time with all the children getting valuable playing experience. A highly enjoyable evening for all in attendance, many thanks to the players, parents, referees, and those helping out with refreshments afterwards.

U6 training also began on Friday evening and we hope that this new batch of boys and girls enjoy playing in the Gaeil Fhánada colours for many years to come.

The U10 girls play Lifford again on Friday next, while the U8s (mixed) and the U10 boys will be playing matches on alternative weekends.

Training for U6's, U8's and U10's will take place all at the same time next Friday, 6:30 – 7:30 in Portsalon. Please bring water bottles and gum shields.

U14 Boys

Our under 14 boys won their opening league game of the season in O'Donnell Park yesterday evening against St Eunans. After a slow start the boys came into the game well and ran out 4-11 to 1-06 winners.

St Eunans dominated the first 15 minutes and during this time Fanad looked very rusty, making a lot of basic mistakes but some great defending by Shaun Carr, Jamie McAteer and Eoghan Logue kept Fanad in the game. Brian Gallagher made a wonderful save during this spell too. But as the game went on Fanads ball players got more involved and the lively trio of Aaron McLaughlin, James McAteer and Darragh O Doherty came into it. The teams were level at half-time 1-04 each with Ben Orsi getting Fanads goal.

The second half started better for Fanad with Declan Brougham and Calum McAteer getting on top of their men around the middle of the field. Fanad stopped trying to run the ball straight down the middle as much and because of this they got some good scores from Cormac Sweeney and Charlie McAteer.

Ben Orsi scored a second goal in this time too. With only a few points between the teams Fanads bench came sealed the game for Fanad with Shaun McDevitt scoring 1-01 and Cian Friel scoring 1-00.

Next up for this group is a home game in Portsalon next Monday night at 7 against Lifford/ Robert Emmetts.

Team: Brian Gallagher, Jamie McAteer, Sean Carr, Eoghan Logue, Cormac Shovlin, Ciaran Sweeney, Charlie McAteer, Calum McAteer, Declan Brougham, Cormac Sweeney, Aaron McLaughlin, Ben Orsi, Darragh Doherty, James McAteer, Theo McArdle, Shaun McDevitt, Dean Friel, Cian Friel, Dabhaid Lynch, Caolan McElwaine

Donegal Minor Ladies Championship

Well done to the Donegal Minor ladies, including our own Lauren Carr, and management in their Ulster ‘A’ semi-final win against Armagh in Sunday.

Girls overcome Naomh Pádraig after a titanic battle

Páirc Uí Shiadhail was the venue yesterday evening for the u14 girls fixture between Gaeil Fhánada and Naomh Pádraig Muff in what was a repeat of last year’s u13B final.

Both teams are plying their trade in Division 1 this year, and they served up a great battle yesterday evening. It was a point apiece after two minutes, the visitors opening the scoring and a Megan Mc Loughlin reply for Gaeil Fhánada. The hosts kicked on and hit two goals with the next two attacks, Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Emma Hunter doing the damage. Roisin Carr and Méabh Mc Ateer were showing well inside but Naomh Pádraig had some flyers in the forward line who were proving elusive, with Ava Walsh, Emily Mc Alister and Ella Costello proving particularly hard to watch. They responded with a goal and a point before Megan Mc Loughlin struck her second point for the Gaels in what was a frantic opening ten minutes. The Fanad defence worked hard with the half back line of Megan, Aoife and Mia particularly busy trying to quell the visitors attack. Méabh Mc Ateer added another goal to the Gaels tally but the visitors responded each time and hit some fine scores. The goal of the game came approaching the break. Aideen Friel did brilliantly to win the ball in her own half and fed it to Iseult. Iseult showed her athleticism by bursting through the Naomh Pádraig rearguard and finishing emphatically in the back of the net. Naomh Pádraig did respond with a point to send the teams in level at the break.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first, but the Gaels were first to get their names on the scoreboard, Leah Mc Loughlin netting twice. The visitors again responded with a goal and a point to reduce the gap to two. Eva Blaney and Jessica Coll entered the fray after the break, while Aoife Carr replaced Emma Hunter later in the half. Aideen Friel and Iseult Ní Mhathúna really stepped up in the second period and drove the Gaels forward. Aideen scored a goal followed by a Rachael Friel point before Leah Mc Loughlin buried her third strike to the back of the net to open up the Gaels’ advantage. Naomh Pádraig responded with a few scores of their own but as a team, Gaeil Fhánada worked extremely hard to ensure the gap wasn’t breached. Caitlin Heraghty led by example at full back, while Aoife Shiels, Jessica Coll, Ella Mc Bride and Natalie Mc Fadden worked themselves into the ground to cover the dangerous Naomh Pádraig forward line. Leah Mc Loughlin finished off the Gaels scoring with her fourth goal of the second half when she buried emphatically into the roof of the net, securing the victory for Gaeil Fhánada.

It was a great battle between two teams committed to playing attacking football. Naomh Pádraig were well served by Roisin Doyle in midfield with Ava Walsh and Ella Costello very good in the forward line.

The Gaels could point to a great display in the second half by the midfield pair of Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Aideen Friel, while Leah Mc Loughlin proved to be unstoppable in front of goals. The half forwards, Rachael Friel, Emma Hunter and Emma Mc Grenaghan meanwhile covered every blade of grass in Portsalon.

Best wishes to Ella Mc Bride who sustained an injury during the game, but we’re pleased to report that she’s on the mend. Míle buíochas to all the parents who helped out with the refreshments last night and last week as well!

Next up is a trip to Carndonagh on Tuesday evening for the final group game.
