The Donegal club which breached GAA rules by hosting a fundraising soccer tournament has decided to accept the sanctions imposed on it.

Naomh Colmcille CLG found itself in hot water with local GAA authorities after a soccer tournament in support of former club coach Paul Dillon, who has been diagnosed with motor neuron disease, was held on its second pitch.

Initially, the Newtowncunningham club was facing a proposed eight-week ban but an appearance in front of the Donegal Hearings Committee resulted in the severity of the punishment being reduced to a fine of €500 and the club losing home advantage for 12 weeks.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page this morning, Naomh Colmcille CLG revealed that it “accepts both the findings of the Hearing Committee and the sanctions imposed against the club” and now wants to draw a line under the controversial saga.

“Regarding the sanctions imposed against CLG Naomh Colmcille by the Hearings Committee following the alleged Breaches of Rules 5.1(a) and 6.40;
“The committee of CLG Naomh Colmcille wishes to indicate that it accepts both the findings of the Hearing Committee and the sanctions imposed against the club. The committee would like to express its regret that it was deemed necessary for the club to be charged with a breach of the said rules as it was never the intention to contravene any rules of the Association.

“In the interests of the club and the Dillon family we now wish to move forward and we consider this matter to be closed. We therefore will not be making any further comment.”
