Burt prevail in reserve encounter

It was a case of away day blues for the reserves at the weekend, where they suffered defeat to Burt in the first game of the reserve league.

 

Gaeil Fhánada began well, with Patsy Friel firing over a lovely point after three minutes to put the visitors into the lead. Burt responded emphatically with a goal and point from Kyle Mc Cann and never looked back from that point on. By the sixteenth minute, the hosts had registered three further points, but Gaeil Fhánada were struggling to find the range, hitting three wides in the same period. Thomas Mc Conigley was performing well on his return and won four kick outs in row in this period. He added his name to the scoreboard after 22 minutes to register the Gaels’ second point. Two further Burt points before the break, one from the lively Ciarán Brady gave them a comfortable half time cushion. Beart 1:06 Gaeil Fhánada 0:02.

 

John Friel was the first to split the posts after the break, firing over a free he won himself. Both teams missed some decent chances before Burt killed the game with their second goal, another Mc Cann strike. A point was added and Mc Cann finished his hat-trick for the hosts with a left footed effort which found the bottom corner. Gaeil Fhánada did respond with a Patsy Friel point. Both teams hit two further points drawing to the conclusion. Paddy Carr with a fine free kick after Seán Friel has been held and a Seamí Coshia strike from play for the Gaels.

 

The score line probably didn’t reflect the gap between the teams, but Burt were much more clinical with their chances. Fanad spurned a lot a decent chances and the final ball also let the lads down on the day. Bernard and his troops have plenty to focus on in the coming week before meeting Glenswilly next weekend.

Both teams thought they’d won it, and both thought they’d lost it, but as the sun sank behind the clubhouse in Burt last Saturday, both teams were probably content with a share of the spoils and a point each on the board.

 

There was definitely a policy of youth on show this evening, with six of last term’s minor team in the starting line with a seventh, Shaun Kerr appearing from the bench. Paul Coyle and Paddy Heraghty were the elder statesmen on show while Seamí Nanny and Jimmy Coyle also have plenty experience on the clock.

 

Gaeil Fhánada were quickest out of the blocks, with Mark Mc Ateer looking very sharp in the opening exchanges. Both teams missed an early chance before Mc Ateer put the Gaels ahead from a free. Seamí Nanny found his range from play to double the Gaels’ tally. Burt opened their account in the tenth minute after good interplay and slick hand passing opened the opportunity. Mark Mc Ateer doubled his tally after good build up play from Oisín Shiels and and Niall Carr shortly after that but Gaeil Fhánada were relieved moments before that, when Eoin Mc Gonigle pulled off a fine save when a goal seemed probable. It turned out to be the first of quite a few important interventions from Mc Gonigle. Mc Ateer added his third in the 15th minute and Fanad were on top during this period, with Paddy Heraghty and Jimmy Coyle providing a strong attacking base. Mc Gonigle with the help of the post pulled off a second stop but Burt did respond with their second point shortly after. Gaeil Fhánada finished the first half with one further score, a fine effort from Seamí Nanny in full flight after Paul Coyle forced a turnover further back the field. Fanad attacked from the throw in in the second period but their forage forward wasn’t fruitful. Burt themselves kicked a wide, the first of many for them in the second period. A big score arrived for the visitors in he moments that followed. Niall Carr got his hands on dirty ball down the left hand touchline, and fed Seamí Nanny. Seamí in turn played Mark Mc Ateer in along the touchline who teed Eoghan Carr up to fist into the net. That put Gaeil Fhánada into a commanding six point lead, but it also seemed to wake Burt from their slumber. Fanad did have a couple of opportunities to extend their lead but the final pass seemed to miscue and on one occasion, Seamí Nanny was very unlucky to see his fisted effort from a tight angle hit both bar and post. It was all Burt for the next five minutes, but were unable to make their pressure count, another Mc Gonigle save, three wides and an effort which fell short let the Gaels off. Fanad were struggling to retain possession from the kickouts and Burt finally registered their first score of the second period in the 13th minute. They followed up with another four minutes later, but spurned another goal opportunity to Mc Gonigle’s exploits in they intervening time. A combination of Mc Gonigle, Jonny Gallagher and Paddy Heraghty thwarted further goal opportunities for the hosts but they did add two further points in the 20th and 23rd minutes to reduce the gap to two. The goal finally came with 26 minutes on the clock, and it arrived courtesy of a penalty. It was adjudged that a Burt forward was dragged back while closing in on goal and the spot kick was awarded. Mc Gonigle got very close, but the kick was struck into he corner and beat his outstretched hand. The Gaels, who had been outplayed for the majority of the second period had to respond, and to be fair to Aidan Mc Ateer’s young team, that’s exactly what they did. A free In was awarded close to the touchline as the game went into injury time. It was a pressure kick, but Seamí Nanny floated the ball delightfully over the bar. Burt were penalised for a kick out collected inside the 21 and Gaeil Fhánada won possessing from the throw ball. A free In was eventually awarded and Seamí fired over from about 25 meters to put the Gaels ahead. Back came Burt, and they weren’t to be denied their point, an equalising point sliced over the bar from the outside of a boot did the trick and that was to be the final action of the contest.

 

Both teams should be satisfied with their evening’s work, and Aidan will definitely be pleased with the fighting spirit shown by his troops in the closing moments to drag themselves back into the contest. Eoin Mc Gonigle pulled off some important saves, while the full back line played very well over the course of the hour. Odhrán Shiels and Bernard Mc Gettigan competed well in the middle third while Mark Mc Ateer and Seamí Nanny were constant threats in the forward line. Eoghan Carr will also be delighted with his goal and Aidan will see plenty to build on over the course of the week before taking on Naomh Ultan next weekend.

In the wake of last week’s draw in Burt, Gaeil Fhánada seniors will be on the road this weekend again, when they travel to Dunkineely to face Naomh Ultan on Sunday, April 14th at 3pm. Best of luck to Aidan and the lads as they look to pick up their first victory of the league season.

 

Bernard Mc Gettigan’s reserves will also be on the road this weekend. They will travel to Glenswilly on Saturday evening, April 13th with throw in scheduled for 5pm. Best of luck to both teams.

Easter Camp

 

Come along to Pairc Ui Shiadhail, Portsalon, this Easter holiday period (23rd-25th April), and work on basic GAA skills in a fun and friendly environment!

 

The camp will take place from 10am - 1pm, and will be for children aged 5-14. €30 per child, €50 for 2 children in the same family, and family deals available for 2+ children in the same family.

Ulster Ladies U14 Festival of Football

 

Iseult Ní Mhathúna, Aideen Friel and Caitlin Heraghty were in action for the Donegal u14's over the weekend at the Ulster Festival of Football in Brookeborough. Donegal played both Fermanagh and Monaghan yesterday, and will now take on Armagh in the Ulster Silver final on the 20th of April. Maith sibh a chailíní!
