Aodh Ruadh club notes

Football

Aodh Ruadh put in a power-packed second half performance to see off the lively challenge of Buncrana in Father Tierney Park on Sunday afternoon. Buncrana got off to the better start, but Ballyshannon came more into things as the half progressed and lead 0-6 to 0-3 at half-time. The Ernesiders faced into the wind on the resumption and seemed a bit wobbly after Buncrana scored an early point and turned the first three kick outs. However Aodh Ruadh quickly settled and hit three fine goals from Johnny Gethins (2) and Darren Drummond to win with a bit to spare, 3-10 to 0-9 the final scoreline. Superb Ballyshannon performances all over the pitch. Michael McKenna was very smooth and composed in defence. Johnny Gethins got through a power of work in midfield and took two clinker goals. Oisín Rooney also made a huge contribution on his introduction. Up front Philip Patton's accuracy was once again a key weapon in the Aodh Ruadh armoury while Dylan Gallagher's tigerish tackling was a sight to behold and he was unlucky to finish without a score to his credit. Darren Drummond also put in a serious shift as the point man for the attack. We have a full match report from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

The reserves didn't fare quite so well against the Inishowen men, Aodh Ruadh coming out on the wrong end of a 2-5 to 0-17 scoreline. The first half was tit for tat thanks to an early Ryan O’Brien free and a well placed penalty, coming after Anthony 'Waddle' Coughlin's shot had been foot blocked following a simply exquisite ball in from Cáelán Drummond. The hosts struggled though towards half time with Conal Sweeny getting the only other score of the half for the homesters as Ballyshannon went in for the break trailing 1-2 to 0-9. Philip McLoone saw a great goal chance go just over the bar, but made no mistake ten minutes later when he side-stepped the keeper before tapping in with the left foot. The hosts played quite well in the second half, and on two occasions were within a score of Buncrana. Odhran McGarrigle marked his senior debut with a well-taken point. However the visitors were powerful through the middle, with Ben Bradley - brother of All-Ireland winner Ryan - coming on in the second half of the senior game.

Team: Sean Taylor; Brian Dorrian, Ronan Drummond, Adam Clarke; Conal Sweeny, Conor Patton, Christopher Goan; Kerry Ryan, Cian McGloin; Ryan O’Brien, Odhran McGarrigle, Philip McLoone; Anthony Coughlin, Gerry Curtis. Subs: JJ Cassidy for Gerry Curtis, James O’Donnell for Cian McGloin, David McLoone for Brian Dorrian.

Aodh Ruadh are back out in Division 2 action this Sunday. This time they make the trip to Killybegs with the reserves going off in Eamonn Byrne Memorial Park at 1.30pm followed by the seniors at 3pm.

The under 16s concluded the round robin league stages in the past week. Naomh Conaill conceded their game last Wednesday and so the only competitive outing was against Dungloe on Monday evening. Aodh Ruadh made the trip to the Rosses knowing Dungloe would be eager to avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the league. And so it proved. The hosts established a one goal cushion by the break, leading 1-6 to 1-3. They stretched that out over the course of the second half to run out winners on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-6. Darragh Flood Dolan did well in a defence which had plenty on it's plate for long stretches. Up front Marty McGarrigle booked himself an excellent goal in a good attacking display. Under 16 action now takes a brief break while the Buncrana Cup concludes with the championship set to get under way on Wednesday 17th April. Training continues as usual on Wednesday at 5.45pm.

The under 12s also made the long trip to Dungloe last week and fared no better than their juvenile counterparts. The side were short a number of players, but fought manfully throughout, especially Barry Campbell who sustained an injury during the second half. The defence was well marshaled by Eoin Cassidy and put in a great display, but the homesters just had a bit too much in hand on the day. The under 12s next outing is against Ardara this Friday evening at 6.30pm in Pearse Memorial Park.

Donegal booked their place in the Buncrana Cup final with a 4-11 to 4-4 win over Cavan in Convoy on Saturday. Star of the show was our own Cian Rooney who bagged himself 3-2 from open play. What a hugely exciting young talent he is. Kyle Murray also played a big role in the win at centre back before having to exit the fray with injury. We wish Kyle the very best for a speedy recovery. Donegal now face Derry in the final next Saturday in Buncrana. The under 17s also returned to winning ways at the weekend against the Breffni men with Senan Rooney, contributing two points as Donegal emerged 3-13 to 0-8 victors.

Ladies

Aodh Ruadh senior ladies' next league outing is on Sunday when Killybegs are the guests in Father Tierney Park, throw-in 11am. Senior and minor ladies training continues on Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Under 16 girls have a challenge against Saint Naul's Wednesday in the Park. Players to be at the dressing room for 5.45pm with throw in at 6.30pm. Training continues this Thursday at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh from 4.15pm to 5.30pm. Players are reminded to bring gloves and gum shields.

The under 14s have an away match on Tuesday against Letterkenny Gaels with a 6.30pm throw in. The team are to meet at Father Tierney Park for 4.45pm.

We had the first round of our under 12 mini league in glorious conditions on Saturday. We had two really well contested games with all the girls really getting stuck in. On the day the Tigers got the better of the Pumas, while the Lions came out on top against the Jaguars. However it looks like this is going to be a very closely contested league with very little between any of the teams. We have been able to secure the Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 4pm for the next three Saturdays. Our thanks goes to the Park Committee for giving us that window to run the league off. The plan is play the remaining round robin games over the next two Saturdays - Tigers v Lions and Pumas v Jaguars, then Tigers v Jaguars and Pumas v Lions. If there is a tie in places after the round robin, we will resolve it with a free kick competition. The third Saturday we will play finals and do presentations. Training as usual this Wednesday at 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. The teams are as follows.

Pumas: Abbie Gallagher, Cádhla Dolan, Emer McDevitt, Louisa McCosker, Maura O'Sullivan, Nessa Mitchell, Niamh Duffy, Rihanna Reynolds, Sara Begley.

Tigers: Ava Duncan, Ellie Brennan, Ellie Rae Lilly, Jessica O'Mahoney, Katie McCaffrey, Leah Melly, Megan Murphy, Nessa Warren, Orlaith Gallagher.

Jaguars: Andrea Moore, Ciara Larkin, Emily McNamee, Lucy Byrne, Molly Begley, Niamh McNulty, Pearl McHugh, Rebecca Downey, Sadhbh Hughes.

Lions: Aine Neilan, Aoife Travers, Ella Willshire, Grace Dolan, Hannah Downey, Katie McGowan, Lauren Foy, Lucy Cleary, Roise Conlon.

Training for under 10s continues this Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh [Munday's field].

Under 8 girls training continues this Wednesday at 5.45pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh [Munday's].

Under 6 girls training continues in Creevy Hall from 6pm to 6.45pm on Fridays until Friday 3rd May. That will be the team's first Friday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh [Munday's] with training continuing in the same time slot of 6pm to 6.45pm. There will be no under 6 girls training on Good Friday.

Congratulations to Megan Kane and the under 14 Donegal girls. The side had victories over Fermanagh and Monaghan to book their place in the Ulster final against Armagh on Saturday April 20th. Megan put in a great display at half back in Donegal's win over Fermanagh. Good luck to the under 15 county girls who take on Tyrone in Castlederg this Saturday at 3pm. Áine Hill, Caoimhe Hughes O'Brien and Emer O'Brien are our representatives on the squad.

Hurling

Adult hurling makes a welcome return to Father Tierney Park on Friday evening as we take on Omagh Saint Enda's in the Junior Hurling League. Throw in is at 7.15 pm and all support would be most welcome.

Our minors had a great battle with Saint Eunan's in the league last Thursday in Father Tierney Park. We fielded nine under 16s in the starting 15. From start to finish the lads fought for every ball before losing out 2-7 to 1-6. The under 14s made the long trip to Carndonagh on the same evening. It was certainly a case of goals winning games in Inishowen as the physically stronger Carn lads won 8-6 to 4-6. Both teams are in action again this Thursday as the minors take on Burt in Father Tierney Park, while the under 14s travel to Ballybofey to take on MacCumhaill's.

On Sunday the under 12's had an enjoyable challenge game with Manorhamilton. Our young enthusiastic squad had a good win over the visitors.

Underage hurling training continues on Sunday for all teams at 12 noon.

Park Committee Annual Table Quiz

This annual Park Committee table quiz takes place in Owen Roe's on Holy Thursday night, 18th April. There has been a lot of refurbishment works at our club buildings over the past few months and this is an important fund-raiser to meet some of the costs involved. As there is daily use of our facilities by hundreds of players across all codes in the club, this is an opportunity to help meet costs by putting in a team of four. It is always a good night as we get a lot of people coming back for Easter. Please confirm participation ASAP by texting David McLoone, Tom Daly or Conal Gallagher.

Pictures

We have great galleries from the minor hurlers games against Saint Naul's, the under 16s clash with Dungloe, the senior ladies league opener against Saint Naul's, and the senior and reserve league openers against Buncrana in the works for this week. Keep an eye on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page where will let you know when they are live.

Easter Camp

Aodh Ruadh are hosting their annual Easter Camp from Tuesday 16th April to Thursday 18th April. Camp runs from 10am to 2.30pm on each of the three days. The camp costs €30 per child and €50 for two children. For further information and bookings call Brian Roper on 087-6139065.

Last one standing

Congratulations to our three winners of Last One Standing competition who correctly picked Westmeath to win the Division 3 title. The football experts were Brian McGill of Ardara, and Marcella Loughlin and John Magee from Ballyshannon. Many thanks to Liam Gallen for sponsoring this fund-raiser and thanks to all who supported it.

GAA Manifesto

Monday saw the launch of the new GAA Manifesto, a celebration of our GAA – of our shared values and of all the people who make our GAA what it is. It is an affirmation of our GAA mission, vision and values, regardless of your role within the organisation, and is built around the statement: ‘GAA – Where We All Belong’ / CLG – Tá Áit Dúinn Uilig Ann’. The Manifesto is based on feedback sought from more than 8,000 people. This research revealed that the sense of belonging the GAA gives is of utmost importance to them. The Manifesto will be available to view on the club's website and social media channels in coming days.
