Gary McFadden believes Gaoth Dobhair have answered their critics by becoming Ulster club football champions.

The Gaeltacht club edged out Scotstown after extra-time in yesterday's provincial final at Healy Park to become the first Donegal winners of the Seamus McFerran Cup since St Joseph's in 1975.

"It's amazing when you think about it. Teams from Donegal have got into Ulster finals and didn't come away with it," the defender noted in the Irish News.

"It's not an easy task by any means, when you come up against teams like Scotstown, who have the experience. This is our first time in Ulster, but we got there in the end."

Commenting on his duel with Monaghan forward Conor McCarthy, who he restricted to a a single point, McFadden stated: "He's an absolute speedster and an athlete, so I knew I had my work cut out for me.

"I just had to try and keep with him. I have marked boys like that most of my life, I usually get the speedster. You just have to be relaxed, you know that you're not going to win every ball out in front, but as long as you stand him up and get him away from goal, your job's done."
