Senior Ladies in Ulster Junior Championship Quarter Final
Gaeil Fhánada v Scotstown, Monaghan.
Date: Saturday, 29th September
Venue: Páirc Uí Shiadhail, Portsalon
Time: 2pm
Gaeil Fhánada made it this far by defeating Naomh Muire in the Junior A Championship County final a few weeks ago. Playing in Ulster is new territory for the ladies but they are looking forward to the challenge of playing Scotstown. As this is a home fixture, it would be great to see a big Fanad support out to see the ladies on Saturday. Ádh mór ar an fhoireann agus ar an bhainistíocht ó gach duine sa chlub. Bígí linn!
Intermediate Championship Quarter Final Draw
Seniors & Reserves: Gaeil Fhánada v Aodh Ruadh. Keep an eye on social media for details of this weekend's fixtures.
After two heavy defeats last weekend to Aodh Ruadh, Fanad will enter the game as huge underdogs as we were in last season's Quarter Final, and we turned in a huge performance that day. Hopefully we can do the same again.
Last gasp Devlin goal nicks the win for Naomh Muire
Naomh Muire 2-10
Gaeil Fhánada 2-7
A goal with the last action of the game saw Naomh Muire rise when all seemed lost to take the win in a keenly contested game at the Banks. The result sees both teams through to the quarter finals while it's also the Annagry sides first win in 22 attempts but one must wonder how they've struggled so much as they are a very stubborn side particularly at home. Fanad will felt this was one that got away as they led at crucial times in the game. Both teams were incensed at some of the decisions made by the referee over the hour and this wasn't helped as neither side were allowed to consult with the referee when the game was in the melting pot. Fanad also missed a penalty in the 32nd minute of the first half but this didn't derail their second half approach.
Naomh Muire started brightly and kept possession well. They hit the first score of the game through a Shaun Yank Boyle free only for Jonny Nanny to show great tenacity to curl over via the cross bar. Boyle again responded with a free before a long ball into the Fanad square was fumbled and Boyle drove high to the roof of the net on 15 minutes. This seemed to ignite Fanad who grabbed the game by the neck and took command. Seami Nanny got his account up and running with two frees before Boyle again responded after a tactical foul from Conor McGonigle. The Annagry outfit were getting some very easy frees in their own half as any Fanad contact was punished. As the clock hit 30 minutes Fanad hit a lovely goal through Jonny Nanny before Michael Sweeney boomed over from all of 55 yards to put Fanad one ahead. Young Bernard McGettigan was fouled as he was about to pull the trigger but Lee Boyle was equal to Seami Nanny's effort but Nanny made up for it by driving over the resulting '45 despite intense verbal pressure from the Naomh Muire players.
HT: Naomh Muire 1-3, Gaeil Fhánada 1-5
Boyle hit the first score of the half before a strong run by Sweeney was squared to Seami Nanny who did well to feed Paddy Heraghty. Heraghty made no mistake with a cool finish. Fanad then decided to keep ball for a while to cool the game but Naomh Muire hassled and harried well. They hit two scores in a row to leave two points between the sides with just 15 minutes remaining. Two dubious efforts which went over the post angered the Annagry outfit but referee Declan Callaghan was well placed to call them wide before Harry Harden reduced to gap to one with 10 minutes remaining. A litany of strange frees called against both teams added to the drama and Brian McVeigh slotted over to push Fanad two ahead after Bernard McGettigan lapped up a short kick out from Boyle. Brendan Nanny Friel made a brilliant stop from Adi O'Gara on 52 minutes. Jack O'Brien then seen the line for verbals directed at the referee but a Harden free again put the minimum between the sides. Sweeney intercepted Adam O'Brien on Fanad's '45 and sent Oisin Shiels on his way who fisted over again. With Fanad two points ahead in injury time it seemed the points would be heading back to the peninsula. However a long period of added time was deemed necessary and Naomh Muire won two frees to level the game. With time up,there was still action for one more play. Tom McHugh was adjudged to have been fouled and Shaun Yank Boyle's free was a mishit but it mattered not as Danny Devlin flicked on the the Fanad net to put them three in the lead.
Fanad were disappointed with the manner of defeat but can focus on a quarter final in two weeks time. Fergus Friel was always looking for ball while Seami Nanny was dangerous throughout. For Naomh Muire, Shaun Yank Boyle's scoring prowess was huge while Adi O'Gara was busy over the course of the game. Naomh Muire will be delighted to gain the win and also push them through to the quarter finals with their 1-2 between the 6th and 8th minute of stoppage time being the ultimate difference.

Twelve points from Lauren Carr in minor victory
Gaeil Fhánada 4:15
Seán Mac Cumhaills 2:02
A Clare Friel hatrick coupled with a shooting master class from Lauren Carr ensured that the minor girls got their championship campaign off to a winning start in sunny Páirc Uí Shiadhail on Saturday morning.
Neither team were at full strength for the game with Michelle Mc Devitt and Orlaigh Carr among the notable absentees for Gaeil Fhánada. Mac Cumhaills had already dispatched of Malin in the group while this was the Gaels’ first match.
Mac Cumhaills started strongly and were in charge on the scoreboard during the first quarter. A Lauren Carr point opened the scoring but Mac Cumhaills replied with a goal to put them ahead. Lauren added another couple of points before the visitors struck again. An attempted point came back of the woodwork and into the hands of the Mac Cumhaills full forward who buried to the back of the net.
It didn’t deter the Fanad girls however and they upped their game. Dearbhla Mc Devitt got the upper hand in her battle, while Niamh Mc Devitt and Siobhán Sweeney were doing very well in the full back line. Lauren Carr really got into her stride, her free kicks were impeccable and she was equally as good from open play. Iseult Ní Mhathúna was playing very well in the middle third while Méabh Duffy was looking very assured in between the sticks. The sides were level by the twenty minute mark, Lauren with all seven of the Gaeil Fhánada points. She tagged on an eighth before Clare Friel popped up with a three pointer. Clare was having a great battle with the Mac Cumhaills full back but she came out best in the duel on this occasion, gathering a ball which was played over the top and rifling it to the back of the net.
HT: Gaeil Fhánada 1:08 Mac Cumhaills 2.01
Fanad continued where they left of after the break. Lauren added another point to her tally in opening exchanges. Mac Cumhaills kept fighting hard but their shooting was letting them down. There was a considerable drop in intensity from both teams as the warm and sunny conditions began to take their toll. Fanad were guilty of a few poor wides before they got their shooting back on track. Clare Friel hit her second goal of the game to open up a clear gap first the first time. It was a typical Clare goal, unleashing a bullet of a shot which gave the keeper no chance. The game was put to bed soon after as Gaeil Fhánada were awarded a penalty. Team captain Niamh Mc Devitt made the long trek up from the full back line to assuredly stroke the penalty to the back of the net. Mac Cumhaills almost replied as they broke up the field from the resulting kick out but some great defending ensured the moment of danger passed. Lauren added further scores to her personal tally before Ciara Mc Elwaine finally spoiled the Lauren party with a fine score with her right foot. Clare Friel sent over a booming score from a tricky angle before Gráinne Sweeney also split the posts in the closing stages. Clare Friel finished off her hatrick before the end, beating the Mac Cumhaills goalkeeper to a long ball played into the square and flicking it over her shoulder into the net.
It was a fine second half performance from the Gaels and it most be noted that the younger players really stepped up and played some great football. Eight of today’s team have already played senior football for the club, but it was a step up for Méabh Duffy, Aoife Gibbons, Kate Sweeney, Gráinne Sweeney, Ciara Mc Elwaine, Dearbhla Mc Devitt, and Iseult Ní Mhathúna who all acquitted themselves very well and looked at home playing with the other girls.
Next up is a long away trip to Malin in a fortnight.
Méabh Duffy, Niamh Mc Devitt (1:0), Siobhán Sweeney, Muireann Ní Mhathúna, Dearbhla Mc Devitt, Ciara Mc Elwaine (0:1), Lauren Carr (0:12), Maria Doherty, Kate Sweeney, Eibhlín Shiels, Gráinne Sweeney (0:1), Tori Gallagher, Clare Friel (3:1) Iseult Ní Mhathúna, Aoife Gibbons.
Anthony Blaney Memorial Match
The inaugural Anthony Blaney Memorial game took place on Friday evening between the Fanad Gaels and Milford U14 teams. The Milford boys won in a closely contested good spirited game that was greatly supported by the Milford and Fanad GAA community. Fergus Friel spoke on behalf of the Milford club, while Fiona Blaney presented the prizes which were sponsored by Swilly Mulroy Credit Union, who were represented by James Coll. There was a lovely atmosphere afterwards where both sides enjoyed refreshments provided by Milford Club. A big thank you to the hosts. Next year's return fixture will be hosted in Portsalon.
Well done Darren!
Gaeil Fhánada minor ace was Donegal Sports Hub latest Sports Person of the Week (in association with O’Reilly’s) last week. Well done Darren, and thanks everyone for voting!
Warwickshire GAA need your help!
The Warwickshire GAA grounds at Pairc n'hEireann are under serious threat from a new road. For the last 18 months they have been led to believe that they would be getting new facilities close by. Now at the last minute Highways England have reneged on this and now propose a mish-mash scheme which involves their county pitch being yards away from a 4 lane A road and our underage pitches also next to this new road. It will ruin the tranquil environment we exist in at the moment. The more signatures they get from the GAA community will be of massive help so please share this post to spread the word. Thank you.
