U12 Girls
U12 girls recorded another draw on Friday evening against St. Michaels in portsalon, 3-7 each. Some strong performances from Mia Mc Garvey, Eva Blaney, Emma Mc Grenahan and Méabh Mc Ateer. Meabh Sweeney, Orla Mc Grenahan, Clodagh Mc Ateer and Grace Begley were very effective in the forward line. Blanaidh Mc Ateer, Chloe Martin and the Friel sisters Anna and Olivia have improved immensely through the season. Lara Blaney and Kaylagh Sweeney's tackling was superb and a real top performance from our GK Lisa Gallagher. The girls have now qualified for the county finals blitz. We all look forward to seeing these girls develop as the summer progresses. Well done girls.
U14 Boys
The U14 boys had a tough start in the Division 2 Northern league away to Glenswilly. The boys defended well in the first half and worked some great scores to go in at half time two points ahead. Glenswilly were that bit stronger in the second half and opened up a big lead.
The Fanad boys battled away and scored a good team goal near the end of the game but it was a bridge too far at this stage. Fanad had the minimum number of players on the night and did themselves proud against a good Glenswilly team.
Brian Gallagher in particular was very impressive in goals and kept Fanad in the game for a long period. Aaron Mc Conigley and Ciaran Sweeney were steady in defence and drove forward at every occasion. Calum Mc Ateer and Patrick Gallagher worked hard in midfield and Dylan Mc Fadden was a handful up front.
Next up is a home game against Letterkenny Gaels on Friday night 25th at 7pm Portsalon.
The U14s team is made up of Brian Gallagher, Hugh Rodgers, Ciaran Sweeney, Ronan Mc Fadden, Cian Sweeney, Aaron Mc Conigley, Caolán Gibbons, Patrick Gallagher, Calum Mc Ateer, Jamie Mc Ateer, Darren Mc Ateer, Brandon Friel, Sean Mc Devitt, Dylan Mc Fadden, Cian Friel.
Disappointing result for Senior Ladies in Castlefin
The Senior Ladies travelled to Castlefin to take on Robert Emmets last Sunday. Both teams were depleted in numbers so the game was played in a 13 a side format. Fanad initially struggled to settle into the game and Robert Emmets took full advantage of this with some well finished scores. Unfortunately Aisling Mc Devitt picked up an injury in the first half and had to leave the field of play. Eibhlín Shiels was then introduced into the full forward line. Fanad did get going before the break and got a few important scores as a result of some good passing and good support play. This left 2 points between the sides at half time.
The second half started competitively with both teams getting their fair share of possession. However when a penalty decision was given against the Fanad girls mid way through the second half, Robert Emmets finished clinically and this left Fanad on the back foot, needing to up their game. Gaeil Fhánada found it difficult to regain composure after this and Robert Emmets pushed on.
Fanad didn't give up until the final whistle but the Castlefin side were ultimately more composed on the ball and made better use of the possession they had.
Full time: Robert Emmets 6-9, Gaeil Fhánada 4-5.
Team: Rosheen Mc Ginley, Niamh Mc Devitt, Aisling Howe, Maggie Friel (0-1), Hannah Shiels, Roisin Mc Elwaine, Orla Mc Gonigle, Eimear Gibbons, Caoimhe Walsh (2-2), Michelle Doherty (0-1), Michelle Mc Devitt (1-1), Aisling Mc Devitt, Maria Doherty
Subs: Eibhlín Shiels (1-0) for Aisling Mc Devitt, Emma Friel for Maria Doherty, Victoria Gallagher for Roisin Mc Elwaine.
Gaels do just enough to bag six point win over dogged Na Rossa
Na Rossa 1-12
Gaeil Fhánada 3-12
Gaeil Fhánada eventually came good to pick up another two league points on the road against a stubborn and hard working Na Rossa side. A potential banana skin became a fully fledged banana skin when Kevin McGinley blew for half time as the hosts deservedly went in one point to the good. The Gaels just could not get going and a combination of poor decision making and lack of work rate led to Na Rossa taking advantage and only for a superb goal by young Bernard McGettigan the scoreline could have been much worse. In that half, Christian Bonner, JP McCready, Shaun McGonagle, Eugene Molloy, Conor McCahill and Odhran Molloy all caused problems from their respective positions and gave Fanad enough to think about at half time.
Both teams were depleted with Na Rossa fielding the bare 15 while Fanad travelled without the services of James Gallagher, Joe Blaney, Mark Friel, Alan McAteer, Mark McAteer, Seami Coshia and Odhran Shiels. Ephrim McFadden made his first start of the year and was a shining light in what was a lacklustre performance from the Fanad side.
Fanad started brightly and had the first score on the board through Michael Sweeney. Odhran Molloy replied for Na Rossa before Ronan McAteer curled over with the outside of his boot against a strong breeze. Christian Bonner cantered through for a wonderful goal before McCahill launched over from range. Fanad replied through Oisin Shiels and Matthew Gallagher, both excellently worked scores. Molloy and McGonagle then got through for Na Rossa for points. The quality of play from both sides was poor as possession was coughed up too easily too often. McAteer repeated the trick to put two points between the sides before McCready popped over two frees to leave 4 points between the sides. A wonderful point from Eoghan Carr was followed by a bullet goal by McGettigan to tie the scores but the last say fell to McCready who tapped over from close range.
HT: Na Rossa 1-7, Gaeil Fhánada 1-6
Fanad started the second half the brightest. Sweeney set McGettigan on his way and his unorthodox shot came back off the post. Carr then knocked over a free before Ephrim McFadden hammered home a great goal after Sweeney sent him through. Na Rossa responded via McCahill and McGonagle who both judged the breeze to perfection to leave the minimum between the sides. Fanad hit the next few scores through Jonny Friel (off his weaker left), Fergal Friel and Carr again. Fanad were then awarded a penalty when McGonigle was fouled as he was ready to fire to an empty net and Odhran Molloy received a silly black card for kicking any football in sight away. This left Na Rossa down to 14 men as Carr hammered home the penalty to open up a 7 point gap. Credit to Na Rossa who hit the next two scores through McCready and corner back Cormac McHugh. Jonny Friel and Conor McGonigle hit two beauties to bring down the curtain on Fanad's scoring while McCready replied with a long range free for Na Rossa.
A case of job done for Fanad against a Na Rossa side who if they battle like they did today they will start to pick up form for championship and indeed give teams their fill on a tight pitch in Dooey. Ten different scorers and a tidy display from Ephrim McFadden was the highlights of the day for Fanad who now move focus to Naomh Ultan next week.
Brendan Friel, Seamus Coyle, Fergus Friel, Frank Sweeney, Conor McGonigle (0-1), Jimmy Coyle, Matthew Gallagher (0-1), Michael Sweeney (0-1), Oisin Shiels (0-1), Ronan McAteer (0-2), Bernard McGettigan (1-0), Jonny Friel (0-1), Paddy Heraghty, Eoghan Carr (1-3, 1p, 1f), Ephrim McFadden (1-0)
Fergal Friel (0-1) for Heraghty inj 33mins, Oisin McFadden for McGettigan 40mins, Patsy Friel for Gallagher.
Get Well Soon
Best wishes to Mark McGarvey who's currently recovering from a recent fall. Mark has featured for our reserve side on several occasions this year and has also been a key stats man for our senior side in 2018.
Mark is a very civil and down to earth lad and we look forward to seeing him back in action.
Ciaran McElwaine
Watch out for our very own Fanad Gaels U12s Ciaran Mc Elwaine who has been selected to play in the exhibition match at half time during the Championship match against Derry on 27th May in Celtic Park. Remember to give him a big cheer.
U12 Boys
Our U12 boys were beaten by Cloughaneely on Wednesday (16th) night. The game was played at a fast pace with excellent skill levels on show from both sides and there was very little between the two teams in the end up.
Both clubs had big squads and were able to put out two teams each. In one of the games the score was Cloughaneely 5-4 to Fanads 2-7 and in the other game Fanad led for most of the match but Cloughaneely finished strongly and won by 2 points.
On the night there were some excellent performances from Cormac Sweeney, Caolan McElwaine and Jamie McAteer in defence with James McAteer, Aaron McLaughlin, Ciaran McElwaine and Caolan Kerr showing well in attack.
This was another good challenge for the U12s and they're improving with every game. They play Glenswilly away from home next Wednesday (23rd) night at 7pm. Good luck lads.
Guess the Score - Donegal v Cavan
The lucky winner of the Bord na nÓg Guess the Score draw is George Kerr, Portsalon. Unfortunately, despite lots of entries and guesses, no one came anywhere near the correct score in this particular competition so a winner was pulled out of a hat. Well done George, we are sure the jersey will get plenty of use this season and in many more future ones! There were 33 full cards returned, so those of you who managed to fill the cards will receive a football each. Thanks again to everyone for their support.
U16 Boys
Our U16s fought back from 5 points down to claim a fully deserved draw away to St. Michael's.
Gaels got off to a great start with a lovely team goal finished by Jack Martin, who had his best game to date.
St. Michael's ended the half the better team and held a 4 point lead at halftime.
Things really looked bad when Kane Mc Laughlin, who had contributed so much, at midfield had to come off injured. But, the Gaels boys raised their game and when Joshua McAteer scored from the penalty spot it was game on.
The Gaels boys were not going to be denied and when the final whistle the comeback was complete and the points were shared.
