Aodh Ruadh club notes

May 22, 2018

Football

Aodh Ruadh came up short against Dungloe on Sunday in a big game at the foot of the Division 1 table. The sides were level pegging at three points apiece at the end of the first quarter with David Dolan, Cian Dolan and Diarmuid McInerney on the mark for the Ernesiders. Then Daniel Ward struck for a goal, but that was answered by points from Diarmuid McInerney (2) and David McGurrin to level the game five minutes from the break. Dungloe kicked on again though and held a 1-6 to 0-6 lead at the turnaround. Damian Cleary got the first point of the new half, but a series of scores from Dungloe raced them into a decent lead. Further points from Diarmuid McInerney, who finished with 0-8 to his credit, weren't sufficient for Aodh Ruadh to take anything from Páirc na Rossan. The reserves fared little better, going down to a 2-17 to 1-4 defeat at the hands of the homesters.

The next outing for Aodh Ruadh is down for Sunday, 3rd June when Glenswilly are the visitors to Father Tierney Park. The reserve game gets matters under way at 1.30pm and is followed by the seniors at 3pm. In the meantime, good luck to Donegal who take on Derry in their Ulster quarter-final this Sunday in Celtic Park at 4pm.

The Aodh Ruadh under 16s season came to a close last Tuesday with a 2-14 to 4-4 away defeat against Convoy.

Under 14 boys training continues on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4.45pm to 6pm.

The under 12 boys have a league match at home against Naomh Columba this Friday evening. Players to be at the Park for 5.15pm with games throwing in at 6pm. Training continues next Monday from 6pm to 7.15pm.

Note change in training day for under 10s. Training will now be every Wednesday at 5.45 pm as well as our usual Friday session at 7.15 pm. Last Saturday we hosted our first home blitz. Four Masters brought three teams, while Saint Naul's and Bundoran each brought two teams. We were down on numbers due to communions locally so we just had nine players for each team. Conor Greenan captained the 2009s and all the lads played strong gutsy football. The 2009 boys played well in all three games and showed great improvement. In particular, their third game against  Four Masters was a great team effort.

Under 8 training continues on Thursdays from 6.15pm until 7.15pm. Under 6 training continues on Fridays from 6pm to 6.45pm at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Ladies

The under 16s took on Saint Naul's last Tuesday. It was frustrating outing from a number of perspectives for the Ernesiders. Sarah Jane Keon and Katie McMullan registered the game's opening points. However Saint Naul's hit 2-2, before Niamh Hughes got the visitors back in the game with a goal. There were additional points from Tia McFarland and Caoimhe Keon, but Mountcharles got a further 1-2 to lead at half-time by two goals. Aodh Ruadh massively upped their game in the second half, but just couldn't get the scores to reflect their dominance of possession. Caoimhe Keon and Sarah Jane Keon were again on the mark, but despite outscoring the hosts in the second half, victory went to the homesters. As ever Caitlin McGarrigle was one of the stars for Aodh Ruadh. Alicia Clyne made some great saves, and we wish her a speedy recovery from the ankle injury she sustained as a result of a poor tackle. Another stand out player who was on the receiving end of a very poor challenge was Ella Clancy, the midfielder sustaining rib damage after being bodily thrown to the ground. That both players finished the game was a real tribute to their attitude and spirit. Elsewhere Ciara Caldwell put in a fine shift on her introduction at corner back in her first game of under 16 football. The girls have training this Wednesday at 7.30pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruiadh.

The under 14 girls have training this Tuesday from 4.15pm to 5.30pm. The girls have a game on Thursday away to Four Masters. Players are to be at the Four Masters pitch in Donegal Town for 5pm for throw in at 5.45pm.

The under 12s have a challenge this Wednesday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh against Ardara. We are awaiting further fixtures from county board.

Under 10 girls training continues at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh this Tuesday from 7.15pm to 8.15pm. The girls have a blitz this Saturday in Bundoran. Players are to be in Gaelic Park, Bundoran for 10.30am.

Under 8 and under 6 training continues on Tuesday at 6pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Good luck to the under 15 county ladies, especially to our own Sarah Jane Keon and Eilish Gallagher, as they take on Down in the Ulster A final this Sunday. That game will be a double header with Donegal's Ulster under 14 C final against Tyrone. Again we have good representation on that team with Katie O'Brien, Lucy McGlynn, Aoibhínn McGarrigle, Caoimhe Hughes-O'Brien and Áine Hill all part of the panel. The under 15 final will throw in first at 2pm and will be followed by the under 14 final at 3.45pm. The games will be at the Drumragh Sarsfield's grounds, a few miles before Omagh on the A32.

Hurling

The under  14s continued their rich vein of form, comprehensively beating Buncrana in Scarvey on Thursday last. The lads have won all their games well and meet Saint Eunan's in the A League Final this Thursday in Father Tierney Park. Throw in is at 7pm and all support would be most welcome.

On Sunday we hosted an under 8 hurling blitz. Other teams who took part included MacCumhaill's and Setanta. We fielded two young teams, and out of a squad of 13 nine of them were under 6. Most of the squad are only hurling since March and they did well against older and stronger squads. Thanks to all the mammies for providing refreshments for everyone and helping in the kitchen.

Training for all age groups on Sunday at 12 noon. All are welcome from 5 years upwards. For any information contact John Rooney on 086-2587793.
