Holders Magherafelt got off to a flyer in the Derry senior football championship yesterday by handing Ballinderry a 1-11 to 0-6 defeat at Rossa Park.
The hosts edged a tight first-half by 0-5 to 0-4 and then outscored their opponents by 0-5 to 0-1 before Peter Quinn’s goal put a seal on the victory.
Elsewhere, Newbridge ran out comfortable winners over Foreglen on a 3-19 to 0-8 score-line at Watty Graham Park, while on Saturday Loup and Bellaghy shared the spoils in a 1-12 apiece draw.
Swatragh fought back to down Dungiven by 2-15 to 1-14 on their home turf and Glen were 2-19 to 1-10 winners over Banagher.
Shane McGuigan hit 0-10 for Slaughtneil as they scored an impressive 0-18-point victory over Kilrea (2-18 to 0-6) at Emmet Park, as Ballinascreen defeated Claudy (1-11 to 1-5) and Coleraine made their goals count against Lavey in a 3-7 to 1-10 win on opening weekend.
