June may not have turned out to be such a memorable one for the Monaghan senior team or their talented score getter Conor McManus but he can still look back on the month of May with great satisfaction becaude he lit up the Ulster championship scene with a sparkling display against Tyrone in Healy Park.

Conor polished off Monaghan's win with a spectacular point from distance in the dying embers and it was that display that saw him named as the Ulster GAA Writers Monthly Merit Award winner for May, the third time that he has picked up a monthly award.

In winning the award, he was pushed by a number of players like his Farney County team-mate Rory Beggan whose point scoring and pinpoint kick outs were a feature of that Ulster championship quarter final success.

Also in the mix was Antrim hurler Nigel Elliott, who played three games for the county during the month of May and won the individual award in two of them.

Another player in the reckoning was Fermanagh's Declan McCusker, who was man of the match against Armagh, and a third Monaghan player in Fintan Kelly.

The award was presented by Seamus McMahon, Sales and Marketing Director of sponsors Quinn Building Products, and was accepted on Conor's behalf by his father Frank, secretary of the Clontibret club, as Conor was unavailable due to work commitments.
