Convery lauded between the posts

From scoring goals to stopping them, Derry's Ruairi Convery is earning rave reviews at both ends of the pitch.

Having retired from the inter-county scene following last year's Nicky Rackard Cup success, Convery answered an SOS call from Derry manager Collie McGurk last weekend.

With regular goalkeeper Michael Kilpatrick on the injured list and no recognised back up, McGurk asked Convery to come out of retirement and step in between the posts, which he did in the Christy Ring Cup win over Down.

This weekend, they take on Kildare in the semi-final and McGurk is hoping that Convery will continue in the absence of Kilpatrick.

"Ruairi's experienced," said McGurk. "He's a good hand. I had hoped to get Mickey 'Kirk' back out but he has a ripped groin. I'll maybe have a chat with Ruairi and see if he'll show for us again.

"We need to build on the Down victory now. We'll be hoping to have Brendan Rogers out but the fellows are playing football obviously against Kildare."
